We're all just happy it works for you. One should always use what works on their system. As software is a lot of preference as well as function, some floats some folks boat and some don't. Be happy and as I said before, forgive this poor old ignorant soul for saying there could possibly be a flaw in the new flavor of the day.
Did I mention I also know how to use regedit and DOS to manually edit as the registry tools don't always do the job. Don't believe me, check some of the manual fixes involved on Semantic's database.
The download was from yesterday. Yes the little green light came on. No, it would not work with DVD2one, neither will AnyDVD. Hated having the popup system 32 folder and didn't need it as it couldn't do anything new. Problem causer and no advantages. So I used Add-Remove, checked Program Files, removed the dirty remnants, ran a registry tool and rebooted. Seems in my lethargy that I must have forgotten an obvious step, for I am being the village idiot.

Go to the official web site and download it again and reinstall it. Stop when you come to the read me file and you will see that Patin Couffin is needed. Personally I have no issues with DVD43 but I can see how it might run into conflict with simialr funtion allpications. There is also a shareware version that has been circulating on aferdawn. After 30 days you see a popup telling you that your trial period has ended. Go to the site below and check it for yourself.

Ouch!
Now the freebie has changed into trialware. Will wonders never cease?
BEWARE: There is another version of DVD43 in circulation (ver 2) that is NOT FREE and expires after 30 days - it stops working and points you to a website to buy a third party product.
DVD43 only works with Win2K and WinXP. If you have Win98 or WinME, I suggest you use
DVD Decrypter which allows you to rip all the files of a DVD to your hard disk.
Thought I'd just throw in the disclaimer for DVD43 from the official website. No go on 98 and ME according to the horse's mouth. Love that Decrypter, the old backup.
Hope ya'all got the right version, or you get a nuisance call from the software.

What's going on? When I downloaded it, the site specifically stated that it was stand-alone and Patin Couffin was not needed and it worked for me. Is mine a trial version now?

There is a warning at the offical web site about a version that's being sold, if you go the the web site I posted it is still freeware. I'm curious brobear, where did you get the copy that you had problems with from. If somone has hacked the freeware version in order to add an lunlock code to, it could have corrupted the code and caused you problem. I just got rid of the damn CD player.

Sophocles,
Patin Couffin is related to SP1 and XP. I'm assuming you're up on all the updates and you're using XP, I forget (the lethargy and all). Anyway run an extended search in files, folders for name and not file. Lots of word files on the subject. Look to setupapi a Notepad document in Windows System 32. Interesting coincidence that. As you're more knowledgable on the subject you can inform the masses once you check out the notes. I found 7 note files and a log.

Sophocles, here ya go... UPDATE: DVD43 is now stand-alone, which means it now works without the VSO's
Patin-Couffin driver. Also, support for Win9x/ME has been implemented. ...

To 64026402: DVD43 even states when installing that it doesn't have all the features of Anydvd, for one, regions. PS-brobear, I also ran a search, nothing ( I have XP)

I use Windows XP pro and my files are all up todate so you are correct in that assumption. The setupapi should be in windows system and the setupapi.dll is in system 32. Setupapi is a log file tht is used to record information about device installation, service-pack installation, and hotfix installations. Setupapi is a Microsoft file, it isn't part of the Patin Couffin engine but it could be listed there.

If you did the SP1 install, there would at least be notes. Search as word or phrase in file (second line)with Patin Couffin as search word, go down and in advanced options, check system folders, hidden files and subfolders. You should get the notes there. Click on the file name found and it takes you to the folder. Not bad for the village idiot, huh?

Thanks bigorange, what I'm cuirous about is how it differs from the version that is on the official web site. If you follow the link that you posted and then go to the homepage you're still in the forum. I've also read where the version downloaded from AD disables itself after 30 days. Guess I'll have to look a litte harder.

Sophocles, yeah, afterdawn kinda jumped out at me when I went to download, and I'd already seen your site, but I didn't see anything about 30 days or having to pay later. Just that it was stand-alone. I definitely don't have Patin Couffin, so what do you think? I definitely ain't payin', I've already got Anydvd, this was just an experiment.

AnyDVD, DVD43 and DVD Region Free
- Up-dated 06/05/2004 -
Watching the performance of "background running" programs over a period of approx. 100 DVD backups has lead me to the following observations -
DVD43
1. DVD43 (ver. 2.0.0.71) is for Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP
2. DVD43 does not remove Macrovision protection !
3. DVD43 (ver. 2.0.0.71) Does not require the Patin-Couffin Driver in order to work. Prior versions do.
AnyDVD
1. AnyDVD is for Windows 95/98/SE/ME/2000/XP.
2. AnyDVD does remove Macrovision protection.
DVD Region Free
1. DVD region Free is for Windows XP/2000/ME/98/98SE/NT4.0 SP5+.
2. DVD Region Free does remove Macrovision protection.
Watching and running for some time AnyDVD, DVD43 and DVD Region Free, individually and in conjunction with other combinations of programs. There are some instances where programs aren't "opened" by some of these programs. By that I mean they are not capable of opening all programs thrown at them. My observations indicate the following order of performance:
1. AnyDVD - Opens 97% + of everything it comes in contact with.
2. DVD Region Free Opens 94% + of everything it comes in contact with.
3. DVD43 (ver. 2.0.0.71) - Opens 94% + of programs it encounters and has the same difficulties with the same DVD's as does DVD Region Free.
As I see it the choice is between -
AnyDVD at $39.99 (USD) OR DVD43 shareware for FREE.
Over the period of approx. 100 DVD's, only 6 different times did something other than DVD43 have to be used opposed to 3 times for AnyDVD.
A side note for what it's worth, when AnyDVD sent out an upgrade for their product, 1 day later DVD43 announced an upgrade for their program also - coincidence, unknown - something worth noting though.
I hope my observations may be of some help for those considering this type of "Decrypter."
Pete

Bigorange,
did you check window update to be sure you have the SP1 service pack. It didn't come preinstalled. I have SP1 and have never had to download any Patin Couffin drivers or ASPI as some programs want. SP1 brings XP up to date and not too far into the future is SP2. And I only checked here while having a beer, sunny, hot, and high grass.

Hey Pete, How do you explain the site I went to? June 5, 2004,16:07. states stand-alone, no Patin Couffin required. I tried it last nite and it worked. Will this one have to be bought later? I bow to your greater expertise.

I am using DVD43 2.071. The read me is exactly the same as 1.4 except the update at the top and the part below about 98/me compatability.
The program looks and works the same and I do not have the Patin driver on the installed computer.
As usual it said it was free. As long as it doesn't stop working in 30 days I think we're in the clear. I don't know why there is conflicting web site information.

I have been seaching the forums and others say that 2.071 on afterdawn is a fake that stops working.
If this is the case then it should be removed from the download section. I noticed a lot of other sites have DVD43 2.071 also.

Well it definitely works now, strange this version doesn't require the Patin Couffin driver, yet the so called "official" site does. I may leave it on now just to see what happens. I think I'll just recommend anydvd from now on. BTW 6402 sq., where did u see these threads?

It does concern me. The thread in the software section said after a day it would say that the 30 day trial was over. Since the read me says free then it would have to be a hack job on our site.
I did notice the readme says to buy anydvd if you want more features.
The 1.4 version doesn't mention buying other programs.
The computer I installed it on isn't important so I'll leave it on to find out what happens.
My burning computers have 1.4 on them.
