I admit i am a complete newbie. i got my wii the other day, and thought i had to get it chipped. Then i find out i can soft mod it - cue excitement!
i have spend days reading manuals, guides. forums about wad files, wiibrickers and uploaders, preloaders etc.
i have tried several times, i have the homebrew channel now in my wii(i think), but with no copied games to test i am stuck.
i am after a guide that will not use zelda, and i have a 3.4e version, with s:lah259?
I have downloaded a couple of games, and have burnt the iso's via imgburn, but comes up with not recognising the dics - is the softmod wrong? is the disk burning wrong?
Am i completely lost? - YEP!!
how do you check it has worked? - i take it you have to have a specific drive to read games, in order to backup, so without that i cannot copy an original to try, so i am stuck.
please help - i really don't want to have to get it hardmodded, it would be impossible to find anyone trustworthy to start with!
thanks
jodie

What guide did you follow?

If you just installed the Homebrew Channel and that was it then your system is not softmodded.

If all you did was install the Homebrew Channel then follow the 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD GUIDE in my sig.

You will not load the games from the normal disc channel you will load them using NeoGamma R6 or use a USB Device and a SD/USB Loader to launch them from the USB Device.

Follow my 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD GUIDE in my sig. Then use NeoGamma R6 to boot the backup disc.

thanks,
i take it i don't delete anything on the sd card already? - the wii has already installed the boot.elf file.
Also, any ideas how i can try and test it? is it still the case that without a lg drive you cannot copy your originals? and i have downloaded a couple of games that have iso's (to check), but any idea how you can tell for definate that they are burnt right? i take it there are none online - like a tester, maybe a clip or something, to make sure your mod has worked?

Since the purpose of the mod was to play backups, trying to play a backup is the only sure way to test.

There are other methods besieds the LG drives available now, though I have not tried any of them. "Superdumper" is one that comes to mind.

Any of the "back up using the Wii" methods will require extra hardware and extra steps.

"and i have downloaded a couple of games that have iso's (to check), but any idea how you can tell for definate that they are burnt right?"

We don't talk about where you got your backups here.

You can't tell if your burns are good unless you try them on a known good modded console.

You will improve your chances of a good first time burn by:

1)Using good quality media
2)Use imgburn to burn at 1/2 the rated speed of the media
3)Use a backup that is in the same region as your console.

my apologies for over stepping the mark - i know my boundries now!
As for "superdump", does that negate the need for the drive to backup original disks?
seems too easy.
thanks

I never said it was easy. It's just a different way to do it. You will need to install additional software into your Wii as well has have a USB device to back up to.

I don't use it (yet). I have the LG drives.

It would be just as simple to use a USB Loader to dump the game to a USB Device. Then use WBFS Manager (which runs on your PC) to extract the dump from the WBFS formated USB Device to your PC.

The problem here is you don't seem very knowledgeable in the Wii modscene. So helping someone that doesn't have a base knowledge of the scene can be hard. You might want to read some of the threads on this site or other Wii modscene sites to get a better knowledge of the scene.

I would start first by making sure you have a working Wii system that can play backups.

Did you burn 1 of the downloaded titles you said you downloaded? If so what program did you burn it with? What media did you use when you burned it? How fast did you burn it? Did it work when you tried to boot it with NeoGamma?
