Flashed this about 5 or so months ago. Couple of days ago it stopped reading discs. Once in a while it'll pick up a game, but only for a few minutes for all intents and purposes, the laser is probably dead.
Ok, choices?
Change the laser? Or, buy a new drive (and if i did that, does it have to be a samsung ms28)?

Which would be the simpliest course of action? I don't have a potentiemeter (spelling) to play with the pots i think they call em.
And, is there a tutorial to swap the laser?

You could try increasing the laser strength with a multimeter. If that doesn't work or doesn't last long, you can replace the laser or replace the drive.
Replacing the laser is fairly easy and there are tutorials out there to do so. If you replace the drive, buy the same type of drive and swap PCBs (unless you know how to dump, spoof, and flash drives).
