i have a list of what chipsets are compatible for xbox 360 flashing, but what i am wondering is can i go to wal-mart and get a desktop computer or bestbuy and find a computer that has a compatible chipset, or do i have to buy an aftermarket chipset, install it, then flash my drive. I am just wanting to buy a pc from a department store with a chipset compatible with flashing my xbox and then return it after i've flashed.
Anyone have pointers for my retarded-ness?
Thanks

Wow really? You want to buy a 200+ machine set it all up and everything then go to the hassle of trying to return it... good luck with that. Just buy a via sata 6421 pci card, they're about $15 and work great, I've used mine to flash about 13 xbox's.

The hassle of buying/returning something that big is worth more than 15 bucks. So just buy a 12-15 dollar VIA 6421 card and put it in the PC you posted this message with.

What, are you gonna go buy a PC from Walmart EVERY time you need to update?

kbohannon, you spend a lot more time finshing the setup of the desktop's windows as you do installing the pci card. you are looking about an hour plus in installing windows compared to 5-10 minutes with pci card. also there is the hassel with walmart on the return of the desktop & money return. is that really worth it?

that and once they see the warranty sticker on the case has been removed in order to access the sata ports, your screwed. and who says the computer your buying is even compatible with 360 drives without the PCI card.......

i will probably just end up sending it in to be flashed, i would have to buy an adapter for it to fit, which is like $55 bucks , plus the 6421 card, i thought i'd be able to do it cheaper myself

I must say this is probobly the worst idea ever. They check those computers like crazy if you are returning them and if they see so much as a smudge on them they will charge you a "restocking fee" of a like 15%.

Besides you need to buy more than just the chipset.

-XCM Opening kit - 10$
==Wouldn't recommend any other kit because they are all inferior to this one. But you can get it for free if you buy any other XCM product like their really good replacement fan.
-Maximus Xtractor Pro 25$ or Xecuter CK3 Lite $35
==I prefer Xecuter products because they are better built and don't burn out if you put the cable in the wrong way.
-Serial Adapter $10-15
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...c.asp?CatId=447
==Lots of people use the direct USB port but the IC chip easily burns out (learned it the hard way) and using a serial adapter is much more reliable and doesn't require as much fiddling with the drivers.
-PCI VIA VT6421A $16

*Prices are from Consolesource.com ...they have uber cheap shipping btw

If you only want to mod your xbox and not other people's xbox your best off sending it to a modding website or having a local modder do it...it will be much cheaper

Well if you think it would be easy to just send it to some one.I see members on her all the time offering to do it for a fraction of the cost, all you need to do is send them your drive.Or you could just look on craigslist.Or if you have a friend that has a desktop, ask them if you buy the card will they let you use their computer and if they have a 360.You can do them both.just a thought

You will need a via 6421 pcmcia card and a connectivity kit or you can power the drive via the xbox (I use a ck3 pro).

By chip do you mean a via sata 6421 pci card? If so that has to be plugged into your pc's pci slot, not sata.

The probe is for flashing 74850c firmware revision of liteon (it is not needed for any other dvd drive).

The 6421 pc card is supposed to be powered via a pci slot. But since the laptop equvalent of pci is pcmcia you will either need to buy a via sata 6421 pcmcia card or a pci to pcmcia adapter (i'm not sure that the latter will work).

If I had to take a guess at something that would work, I would probably go with this.

Hi. I am wondering if the nGear sata & IDE PCI controller card VIA 6421A chipset will work. does the fact that it is a 6421A make it unsuitable?
