Hi guys, ive been reading through the stickies and many other forums but cannot find out what i realy want to know so here comes another thread relating the the RROD.

Like many of you here i have been given a broken xbox360 by a friend and its hurting me to see it just sitting there. I do know that that my mate has tried the towel trick/penny trick and just about everyother trick i would imagine :) and all he could get was 3 red lights.

Since i have had it i have tried redoing the thermal paste and leaving the xclamps but could also only get 3 red lights with the famous 0020 error code, so i then decided to buy the parts for the xclamp mod and perform the modification but same old same old 0020 error code.

I would like to think that this console can be fixed so i can take advantage of getting a free xbox and at the same time luagh at my friend for giving it to me lol, but there are a few problems i see here and i am in doubt as to wether it can be done or not.

1st i can clearly see that the mobo is warped especialy directly under the gpu so im starting to wonder wether the gpu is actualy fried but i dont know how to test this???? any ideas

2nd He has cut away a big square out the top of the box and this is the part where the dvd drive screws go (i think) , basically i dont think adaquate pressure can be applied to straighten the board as some of the screw holes are no longer there (what an idiot right?)

anyway the board has the xclamp mod and ive tried varios pressures on the screws but still just get the 0020 error code, i have been reading up and down the net for a fix but most of them involve a towel, heatgun or pennies, all that have been tried other than the heatgun method so my question is where do i go from here???

i have been testing the board out of the case as pressure cant be applied anyway but i have also bi=ought a faulty xbox of ebay so i can test this board in a popper case and hopefully have a working machine out of the both of them as mine seems to be a hardware fault and the one i am buying is a disk read error fualt so who knows i might get lucky ahh (i doubt it but there you go)

anyways its late now and i feel like ive been waffling on for ages so im off to bed, i just hope someone out there has a suggestion as all i can think is its a pressure problem due to not being screwed down propperly and i cant test this theory until the faulty ebay unit arrives :(

regards

nick

you need to re-melt the solder joints under the GPU and probably the CPU and ANA/HANA chip and I think you should get some life out of it. But if you say the board is "warped" then it may be beyond repair.

Post what your local area is, and see if anyone around there can do a "solder reflow" for you using a "rework or reballing station" most people on here charge about 20$ for it and that is a long term fix depending on the condition of the board. - just watch out for cowboys like me who do it with a propane torch.

thanks for your replies, i live in the Uk so if any of you know of were i could get a solder reflow done then please post

Although i have now seen evidence of solder splattered all over the bottom of the board, take a peek and post back your views as im not sure if this is beyond repair

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm238...0920_142443.jpg

I have also screwed the board to a piece of wood and overheated it a little to try and bend the board back to shape, see here---------->

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm238...0920_182711.jpg

No luck tho just same old 0020 error as soon as i turn on. Could someone please tell me if i need the pennies on the bottom chips for the purpose of this test. what i mean to say is that if there are no pennies/heat pads on the four bottom chips could this be causing the 0020 error?? If so i will just put them on there and screw the board back down on the wood!

Remember i am only using the wood to provide the pressure need as i do not have a suitable case to do so at the moment!!

In regards to the heat gun process i will wait to see what you guys think of the above pictures first, mean time i will google to see what i can find out about it.

Remember guys i got this x box for free and am in doubt as to whether it is or is not repairable so i don't really care if i fuck it up trying the extreme if you know what i mean lol

thanks again for your input i will check back in a while for more!!

It's being caused by either a broken solder joint under the CPU or GPU or RAM.

Make sure the screws are tight enough and attampt the penny fix if nothing else works.

I still have the board screwed down to a bit of wood, i have made sure the screws on the x-clamp mod are tight enough and i have also used the penny trick but still no joy :(

Im probably going to go with the heat gun method that i have seen on youtube as i believe this to be the problem going by the above pics anyways. Any more views on the matter before i proceed???

If i do it i am a little worried about a thing or 2 that maybe you guys could shed some light on.

Because the mobo is warped and i can see that clearly i think this will cause me some problems as in the you tube video you have to heat the top and bottom of the board and let it cool down. This would mean me removing the board from the piece of wood i have it screwed to and allowing it to return to its now naturally warped shape. this in turn means that one the board is cooled down after the heat gun method there is a possibility of the solders breaking when i screw it back down into a case and apply pressure.

what do you guys think, any advice on this matter would be great

thanks

just leave it attached to the wood and just heat the top side.. The heat gun method is by far the hardest self fix, hold it in one spot too long and pop goes a capacitor right in your face. I would do one of the following..

1) take it to someone with a reflow machine and pay them a small amount to fix it, if they say its bricked then its bricked
2) throw it away and buy another broken console off ebay and do a simple xclamp fix on it

if you dont already own a heat gun the cost of that tool alone is far greater than a reflow.

Oh well i think i have tried just about everything that can be tried and still the 0020 error accours so i guess i am going to call it a day with this xbox :(

I tried the heat gun method and was very careful not to burn anything, I also re- pasted the gpu and cpu with arctic silver and then placed the pennies where they need to be before screwing the board back to my piece of wood but still the same god damn error code, I guess thats it for this console as nothing at all that i tried changed the error code no matter what it was, i give up :(

I am awaiting delivery of a faulty ebay xbox that apparently works fine other than the message that says "please insert this disk into an xbox 360" (funny) and i think after watching loads of youtube videos should be a simple fix.

Has anyone had experience with this problem??

The drive in that xbox is probably not the drive that goes in it. If not you can't fix it.

As for your first question. Bake the xbox. It might sound stupid but it works for video cards and other PC components so why not give it a go. Dont over do it or you will end up burning the PCB

Could you please explain a little please mate as i though it was possible to replace the drive?

According to some after dawn threads it is any way....
As far as i know you just need the original firmware off of the drive and then it can be flashed to the replacement.

But i also watched an interesting you tube video where the guy just swapped the circuitry form the old drive and put it in the replacement. This would remove the need to be flashing firmware.

Now Ive had a little think i see what you mean but even in the case of it being a flashed drive it is still possible to restore to original firmware by extracting the drive key from the existing firmware and then injecting it into an orig.bin file. I have read about this numerous times before i bid on the xbox in question.

Ive already tried what you suggest, please read the above post but thanks anyway.

Last question, Does anyone else think i might run into problems with the drive issue. I would ask the seller about this but the guy hasn't responded to 3 messages so im gonna give it until Saturday then report him if no contact is made and i don't receive the xbox.

I hate ebay sellers with poor communication skills ;(
