Have a RROD, tried an x-clamp fix, made the box work for a few minutes, but the next time I turned it on the RROD came back.
Was going to try the llama version of the x-clamp fix and see if that did anything.
Would also upgrading the CPU/GPU heatsinks from 1st gen to 2nd gen fix anything? Or replacing the stock fan with the Talismoon one? At that point I'm sinking like $40 more into fixing the damned thing though...

i'd say check reviews of the talismoon fans.... i fitted one to my old 360 after an x-clamp fix and by christ it sounds like a frikkin military jet is taxying round the front room!!!!! It may push through an extra 'blah'% of air through the system but the noise doesn't seem like a fair trade off :) I did cut out the vented hole section out of the metal casing to help with air circ and whipped the old fan back in too :)

If it's possible i'd next try a new style of heatsink if it can be retro fitted to the older style of xbox 360

Oh, I should have mentioned that the error code is 0022. Is my only option at this point getting a reflow or something like that? I don't think there's anyone close by to me in Chapel Hill that does that. I don't really feel like driving and paying some crazy amount of money to get it done either.

Is my best bet to go out and just buy a new 360? The new models are supposed to be RROD proof or something like that, right? Are there going to be issues doing the firmware stuff? I have a Xtractor, I know I needed that to mod a couple of my friend's 360s
