I've been trying to fix my 40GB PS3 for sometime now and can't seem to find where the problem lies.
It all started when the laser on the blu-ray drive started to pack up. causing games to fail to load and movies to hang then reboot the system.
So, I ordered a new laser unit and fitted it ok. Put the drive back into the system but can no longer insert discs.
When the system turns on it seems to run the eject sequence followed by the blue 'disc inserted' light on steady. If i hit eject the system beeps 3 times ie. no disc in. then turns the blue light off.
So i thought ok, must be the disc loader sensor, so replaced that.
Still does not work.
In the end i have now ended up buying a whole new drive which gives exactly the same problem. I know people have been saying that the controller board needs to match the main board but if they don;t the system still allows you to insert the disc but then errors when loading.
I have seen a couple of other threads around the net from people with similar errors but no resolutions ever posted.
My system is way out of warrenty and i've had it in many pieces so calling Sony is not the answer.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen and fixed this issue or has any suggestions of what to look at next??
first of all,,the laser you bought does it have the same serial numbers as the orignal laser,,the numbers have to match,,and yes buying a new drive is useless,,just like the xbox 360,,you have to spoof the firmware on the drive to match the motherboard,,which cannot be done as of yet,,and ihave also heard that some aftermarket lasers work for about 4 days and die again,,anything you buy online your taking a chance,,check out this link,,is this the same laser you got,,,,,http://www.psxboy.com/348_PS3-Lens-with-Mechanism-KEM-400AAA.html
Yeah, nearly. I purchased a KES-400A (just the laser, without tray). I think i may be a little forward on this now. I can get it to partly take the disc (about 1/2 inch) and it does recognise when a disc is being entered ie the blue light comes on when you place a disc in. So nearly there. I think it has something to do with the system main board / OS thinking there is a disc loaded and the drive being empty.
Will attempt later to try and assemble the drive in a loaded state and see what happens.
