yes just make sure you use jungleflasher to get the key if you don't have it already, then when you get the new drive flash it with ixtreme 1.6 (for w/e type drive your using i would suggest a benq) but using the key from your original drive. you will see the option to spoof drive or firmware forget which it says, and then your done. Its pretty simple.

360 Benq ixtreme 1.6, Talismoon Whispermax (blue), custom window, black metallic paint, western digital 120gb hard drive
Wii (launch console) 3.3 Twilight Hack wiigator .3g
fat PSP 3.51 m33-7
DS (original blue) g6 lite flash kit w/passcard

Open Tray is usually a laser issue. You can replace the laser for around 10$. BenQ Laser on ebay

I've bought from this Ebayer and never had a problem.

Doing something similar myself replacing a broken hitachi with a Samsung ms28 got from hong kong on ebay but having some trouble. I have got the key from the hitachi but can't figure out how to put it on the new ms28.
Using JF but it wont let you edit the key. The Source firmwares key is 00000000000 and the target is 77777777777777 I presume I need to change them both to the original key so if anyone knows how please tell.

You will need to dump the Hitachi firmware again. 00000000000000 is not a valid key.

Sorry I wasn't clear the 000000000000 key is from the source firmware which is the stock fw on the new ms28.
The Hitachi key was 165E450EA6EED55B9C7BBC3011BF841D but I don't know how or where to put this in JF when flashing the new ms28.

In Jungle Flasher:

Load original Hitachi firmware into SOURCE.
Load IX 1.6 for Samsung into TARGET.
Click SPOOF SOURCE TO TARGET.
Go to MTKFlash tab. Make sure your Samsung is detected. Click Sammy Unlock.
Write firmware.

well i am not going to be using a soldering iron so instead of replacing the laser, should i just put the main green board out of the old drive into the new drive?

If you swap BenQ PCB boards, you still have to solder. I believe the BenQ PCBs have 6 wires you would have to desolder and resolder.

You can do this with the Samsung and Hitachi. But with the Lite-ON and BenQ, it requires soldering. There is a couple of ribbon cables you have to disconnect but there is 6 wires that require desoldering.

Soldering is not as hard as you think and you can get a soldering iorn with some solder on ebay for round £10. There's some good tutorial videos on youtube.
Anyway back to my problem. Did what you said above leerage but when I went to write the fw it said failed and then froze and I can't detect it now. I only have one flash under my belt but it was with a ms28 also and rekon I've either bricked this or my sata card isn't installed right. How do you check if the drivers are installed on it. Is there anything you can do when you can't detect the drive?

If there is no firmware on the drive, it won't be detected by JF. Make sure you have the I/O port selected (the SATA port the Samsung is on) and click Intro/Device ID. A pop up box will come up and click OK. You will see dots go across the bottom, power cycle the drive (disconnect DVD drive power cable and plug back in within 1 second).

Tried doing that 100 times got it to work once but only said drive in vendor mode but didn't say anything about the drive in port properties or elsewhere and it would fail if I tried to write to it.
Do you have to plug the dvd drive out and in within 1 sec straight after pressing ok?
