My xbox 360 has been flashed for a year or so now and usually working great.

Suddenly it started refusing to read the discs - I put a disc in, it could be a backup, original game or even a music cd and the disc briefly spins for a second or so and the dashboard displays the 'reading' mesage then the disc stops spinning and the message changes to 'open tray' and the disc is not recognised by the console.

Has anyone encountered similar problems or knows a fix?
The drive in the console is a hitachi vad6038 and I have opened it back up and checked that it is connected properly.

I don't mind buying a new drive to see if that was the problem but I believe tthe drive has a key that needs to be somehow copied over - prehaps some advice there too?

Thanks.

Open tray is usually a laser issue. You might want to double check what type of DVD drive you have. There are Hitachi drives but when you mentioned VAD6038, that is a BenQ.

Sorry, I did mean benq :)

I can also get hold of a replacement laser module pretty easily.
If i did this then would I be correct in thinking that there would be no need to mess about with drive keys?

Correct, if you replace the laser, you do not have to mess with firmware or drive keys. The only thing when replacing the laser is it will require to use a soldering iron. They apply solder over 3 small connections as an anti-static point. All you have to do is knock off that solder ball and install the laser.

It will work. I've done a lot of laser replacements. Most issues were the "Open Tray" error; some the Dirty Disc Error.
