Hi there

I am not completly new to flashing, have done a few liteon drives but this is my 1st Hitachi. It is ROM version 0059DJ.

1st up here is what hardware / Software i have been using:

Jungleflasher
CK3 pro (just for power, not using the probe)
iXtreme
CK3 USB driver
Windows XP
VIA Sata Card with 6421 chipset

I have been using the Jungleflasher PDF tutorial. I've got the drive to show up fine, using the correct port (under DvDKey 32 tab i have com12 selected and its showing that i have the drive connected using the CK3 pro and its status is ready). In the Hitachi tab i have set the drive to Mode B that all went fine. My problem starts when i try use PortIO32 (page 46 of the JF guide) to find my drive in windows. JF tutorial says my PC should find my drive and recognise it as a Mass USB storage device but this doesnt happen. When i open up device manager there is no USB Mass Storage Device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers tab so i can install the JungleUSB Driver.

I have tried to use WinAPI instead of PortIO but that doesnt want to work either

Here is my JF log if that helps

Re-install the VIA driver that you removed to flash the Lite-ON. It is usually viamraid.sys or vsmraid.sys. Just put it back into the C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers folder and reboot. Then you will use WinAPI (bubble selection under the Hitachi tab), send Mode B, and you might have to refresh a couple of times.

Right so have the viamraid.sys in my drivers folder and its working again in device manager but everytime i turn the drive on using the connectivity tool it makes my computer freeze, opening the tray on the drive makes it less "laggy" with my mouse but even when i got it to show up on JF it froze / crashed my PC before i could get it into mode b. Know what i'm doing wrong?

Have you tried getting in to mode B with slax and then using jungle flasher to do the dump/flash?

So been doing some reading on getting the hitachi into mode b using Slax. Trying to follow this guide http://utterchaosx.blogspot.com/2006/07/...th-live-cd.html but i was using the live CD. It does say the live CD in that guide just i dont seem to be able to get the same screens coming up in the screen shots. Just read another forum that tells me to use Probutus' Slax as the live CD wont work. Anyone got a guide that i can follow? Or any advice as what else to do?

Still havnt managed to get this sorted yet, got slax running but not sure if i am doing it correctly. Still the same thing applies. If i leave the VIA drivers installed then my PC just freezes for 20 secs then stops for 2 secs then back to aqnother freeze. When trying to uninstall the drivers i can get the drive to show up in the port properties in JF and get it to mode b still but after that i get no where.

In the JF PDF guide it says if you are using the portIO method "First you need to connect the drive to your PC with a Sata-USB Bridge Adapter" i havnt got one of those (if that isnt a CK3 connectivity kit)
Should i be getting one?

I've been reading loads and loads about this trying to get it sorted, have another PC i can try the sata VIA PCI in and see if that helps for some reason, after that i'm pretty much out of ideas. Any help is greatly appreciated / needed ;)

hi hincey

just a thought and you may like to try.......

Firstly you say that the drive is found in the Port properties and you get a good mode b using the portIO drivers. There is a section in the JF manual that says 'JungleFlasher WILL NOT scan for Hardware Changes after setting ModeB for PortIO users. Instead, the tasks are carried out, as long as the drive Inquires on the I / O Port'

So it may not be recognised in the drive section and allocated a drive letter......

or try the jungleUSB drivers and use USmodeB, connect the CK3 up with the USB cable connected to, then click the USmodeB button and follow the instructions. It may have been a fluke but it still got me round the problem.

hope this helps you out.

Ok will try that out. Thanks alot.

Only thing that i need clarifying if you could. In the JF PDF guide it says if you are using the portIO method "First you need to connect the drive to your PC with a Sata-USB Bridge Adapter" is that another adapter to go out and buy or will the same thing be achieved by using my connectivity kit to connect to drive to my pc?

morning Hincey

I've upgraded each type of Hitatchi drive using JF and all have been done without the USB bridge adapter, most have been done with just the sata and 360 to power it. Now i have a CK3 it just makes the whole process to power it and modeB it easier.

hi hincey

well i hope that usb bridge makes the process work :)

did you try loading the drive back into JF, getting it to modeB status and seen in the port properties? i spent way too much time worrying about my DVD not being assigned a letter. Just give it another try in portIO and after it is in modeB follow the new look JF manual with the flow chart thingy m'bob and see where you go..... it actually uses a 59 in the pictures and if it don't work then nothing lost really.

Let me know how you go.

Hello again, sorted one drive now another is doing the same freezing but with no help from the 1st solution. Thats the short version anyway for the stupidly long version read on. (Sorry! Tried to keep it short but that was impossible)

I have finally got this drive flashed. After trying loads using my VIA PCI sata card and still the same freezing. I realised that i have a sata on my motherboard (Abit Av-8). So with the VIA drivers and the PCI card still installed i simply plugged the sata cable into the motherboard. It loaded up in JF fine with no freeze and the flash went through fine. Here is the log

GREAT! Tested it with a backup copy of another game and it loaded fine.
I have another Hitachi with exactly the same Firmware (59) and even manufactured in the same month (June 2006). So after sorting my freezing issue with the last one i thought this one would be no probs, sorted in 5 mins...Wrong!

So i tried retracing my steps that have alraedy worked for me (the PC hadnt even been turned off since i flashed the 1st one). So got the new drive out plugged it into the sata cable connected to my motherboard and it froze my PC just like with the VIA drivers / PCI card. So i pretty much pulled my hair out. After trying many different combo's some of which that i can remember include:

# viamraid.sys installed in system32/drivers with VIA RAID Controller - 3249 and VIA SATA RAID Controller turned ON in device manager.

# viamraid.sys deleted out of system32/drivers with VIA RAID Controller - 3249 and VIA SATA RAID Controller turned OFF in device manager.

#Some older VIA drivers (530c instead of 580c) which changed the VIA RAID Controller from 3249 to 6421 or something can't remember exactly

WHILE at all of these changes using both the VIA sata ports and the motherboard sata ports.

Only sometimes will the drive show up in the port properties and thats only ever using the VIA ports (usually with the drivers installed and immediatly after a reboot but sometimes without but not often). NEVER using the motherboard ports since doing the 1st drive successfully. (This is the really anoying bit, the fact that i have flashed one drive fine using the motherboard and now this drive doesnt ever show up in the JF port properties section)

So i cut my losses and tried to use the VIA ports as sometimes it wasnt freezing. So got it coming up in the port properties in JF send it to mode B. Got it showing up in the "Drive" section in JF. Dumped the drive and saved the Key. Then i have tried to flash with iXtreme and the drive has froze my PC again. Only way to bring it back from a freeze is to unplug the sata cable and only way to get the drive showing up in JF is to reboot my PC without the drive turned on and then turn it on inside windows. If i turn the drive on at the same time and booting up my PC it just hangs at the loading screen.

Now when i just try to dump the drive again it just freezes or when i try to point JF to my key that i had saved in the firmware tool 32 tab and flash the drive it freezes. Here is the log from when i got the key off this 2nd drive

Hello again, after doing a bit of thinking i checked out what exact motherboard i have and its a AV8 (VIA K8T800P-8237). Would the fact that the motherboard is VIA as well as the PCI card cause the freezes? If so how would i prevent it from happening?

Try this way:

1) Connect the Hitachi drive to your motherboard sata port
switch on your pc and make sure your hitachi drive has power.

2) If computer fails to boot because you have the hitachi drive attached, eject the dvd tray and it should be able to boot up fine now.

3) Once in windows load JF and check to see if your Hitachi is listed under port properties, if it is click send Mode B and wait for windows to recognise drive and add it to the drive list.

4) You should now be able to Read Flash Firmware

5) If your Hitachi wasn't added to the drive list dont worry just press the reset button on your pc so that the PC restarts (do not press the power off button only the reset button) this way your drive will stay in mode B while your pc is restarted.

6) When Windows starts it will automatically load the Hitachi Driver

7)Go back to JF Dump Drive firmware, and then you should be able to flash it with your custom firmware.
