Found a pretty useful vid on ebay about using a rework station: Reworking They melt the connections, remove the chip, clean all the solder off, reball it, then melt the chip back onto the board. How important is the reballing part? I found a hot air station for a decent price, and if needed would mount the board on a hot plate type thing to rework the solder joins, but is that going to provide a permanent fix if I don't reball it too?

I have reballed five xbox360 gpus so far and its been over 3 months and so far no problems. one of the consoles had the xclamp fix done to it so its early days yet for that one.

i use a hotair rework station to remove the gpu and then i clean the solder off the chip with flux paste then iso pro for a complete clean.
i then use a stincil for the gpu to line up the solder balls i use leaded balls, then i use my hotair gun to melt the balls and remove the stincil.

the most tricky part is lining up the gpu to the board it takes practice but as long as you line up the chip on the outside lines and have a steady hand you should be alright.

i have tried many ways to fix the rrod xclamp fix also reflow but so far this has been the most reliable fix yet.

have you tried fixing any by just reworking them? I am wondering if just a reflow on a infra-red / hot air station is going to end up rroding again anyway like they do with an xclamp fix.

I use a infar red rework station T-870 to reflow most of my customers boards, which works most of the time but some do come back and thats when i perform reballing.
