Hi guys,
This is my first post. I am also terribly novice so please take it easy,
I am desperate for help.
I have a Japanese wii. When I first bought about 2 years ago, it used to run games no issues (US games wont run of course).
Lately, many of the games I had give Err 001, Unauthorized device ..etc.
I tried to play with anyregion changer and wii update (amm I could have made things worst in the process).

Any how, I also bought wii fit which came with the US CD. of course it could not work so I have a useless wii fit for the last months.

I took it to several workshops but all could not fix (note: workshops here are not so advanced as in other places).

Help is needed with any of the following:
- please help me get my wii fit to work
- please help overcome the Err 001 issue with other games
- If you can be generous and help me modify the menus to English of Japanese that will be great.

I think my firmware is 4.1j

How is it modded?

Error 001 is most common with the wiikey modchip. If you have a wiikey then update it from this guide http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/597460

As for running US games, if you do have a wiikey then use the wiikey config disk to turn on region override.

Alternatively, if you dont have a wiikey or dont want to update it then you can install homebrew channel and gecko OS. Booting the games through gecko should let you load most out-of-region games, as well as bypass the 001 error.

If you want to know what type of Hardmod you have then you will need to open the Wii and take a picture of the Modchip and post it here.

As for changing the menu to English you would need to softmod the system then use AnyRegionChanger to change the JAP system to a USA system.

You could start off bu softmodding your system with the 4.1 Firmware Softmod Guide in my sig. After that you will need to find a guide on how to convert your system from JAP to USA. This isn't something a novice should do. So make sure you do your research and find as much info as you can before converting the system.

Hi,
Done the surgey and -phew- I have not killed the thing.
This is how it looks. seems there's no modchip right?

If so, what should I do next.

BTW, I remember trying anyregoinchanger earlier but it could not change the menu. Maybe you can lead me to a step-by-step guide!!

Also, I remember some of the shops here telling me that (their) modchip wont help me!!

I feel getting closer to removing this Err001 thing and get my wii fit to work. What should I do now?!

Thanks for your help

The modchip is that tiny blue thing just right of the center, near where the ribbon cable connects.

And yes, it is a wiikey.

I have never seen a Wiikey shaped like that. Is it a clone?

Oh!
I'm terribly sorry.
I see it's not the best photo.
I have the drive flipped over the wii box. I should have put the drive next to the wii.
Ammm! not a problem. I can open it again and take another shot with the drive sitting next to the wii box ... guess I'm enjoying dismantling this baby :)

But when I looked around in youtube and sites like wiikey. I noticed the chip with or wo the wiring. Mine had none of that as far as I could see.

Will give it another shot and send.

In meantime, is there a way to tell if my wii is softmodded.?!

Ok, I looked again and I think larrylje's right that it's a clone wiikey. The picture isnt that good and I didnt look closely enough.

If it is indeed a clone then updating the chip probably isnt an option. Most of the clone modchips aren't compatible with the newer wiikey firmwares.

You're probably going to need to install homebrew channel and gecko OS to bypass the 001 error.

For a while, I thought you menat the whole console is a clone.
Ok. So I will re-open it and take a clearer shot at the blue chip. I have circled in the same photo. just tell me if this is the one.

Then, I have couple of questions:
1- If what I have is a clone wiikey, is it possible/safe to just remove it and install a normal one?

2- Where is the most straightforward guide to installing homebrew and geko. I tried installing homebrew on my own once and spent long time and several trial-error attempts.

You've been great help so far.

So I hope you guys are still around.
Is this the chip I should look at?

It reads "wii ju"
but it seems tightly soldered to the board .. so I should not hope to remove it and put another chip??!!

With this I will be left with Geko option right?

Also, I have another point needing your help:
After failing with anyregionchanger several times [before this post', I read that it wont work for versions above 3.4. What do you think about that?

Please bare with me just with the few next steps... I have more than 10 cds waiting to be played after I get rid of Err001 :)
