just released today, september 28, it has nasty side effects on current softmodded wiis; it will remove all installed homebrew traces.

if you already updated, you'll need to buy a retail copy of lego indiana jones and use the indiana pwns exploit, or a retail copy of super smash bros brawl and use the SSBB smash stack exploit to directly boot your homebrew.

take note, THE EXPLOIT MUST BE USED EVERYTIME SINCE HBC CANNOT BE INSTALLED!

best is NOT to update.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd

wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

At this time I revised the softmod guide to work on 4.1 and below firmware. You will just stay at the firmware you are on now and softmod it.

This sucks for people who have earlier than 4.1 or is there a way to upgrade just to 4.1 without going to 4.2?

There is Waninkoko Firmware Updater 4.1 but I have heard mixed reviews of it. Some claim they have bricked using it.

But I think you could also use NUS to download 4.1 system menu and install it.

If you are on 3.4 and use NUS, wouldn't that bump you all the way up to 4.2? I know it doesn't give you an option that I have seen.

NUS has system menus in their database.

So how do you do it? Everytime I have in the past, it has gone to the lastest version.

Start NUS on your PC Tick the box that says Pack-> WAD. Now go to Database>System>System Menu>Then choose the 4.1 firmware of your region.

After that choose Start NUS Download.

After that you will have the 4.1 firmware WAD file in the folder it creates.

I am not 100% sure if this would work but I don't see why it wouldn't.

This is pretty interesting. I have heard for many weeks now, people saying how ridiculous and wasteful it was to have a hard modded Wii. What, with the new chips coming out from Wiikey, etc, and all. People pretty much figured the Wii was blown wide open and the chips were nearly useless. But this is exactly what I was afraid of. Nintendo PWNed our asses! It will be cracked eventually, but what if this update was on SMG2, SSBB2, etc? We would all be salivating to get our hands on a working back-up. Perfect reason to have a hard modded Wii. My 2 cents. ---Chikn

We have seen this before with 4.0 firmware. Didn't take long to get around it. Hell the update has only been out for 24 hours.

Was it this extensive with the 4.0 update? I don't remember. Oh well, perhaps I am over reacting. The sky is falling...the sky is falling!! ---Chikn

i think the best is to have both a modchip and softmod installed. if both aren't affected at the same time, you have something to fall back on.

what the wii needs is a modchip that can direct boot into homebrew, like the ps2 dms4 modchip.

No doubt... I have seen a post on another site where they have put the HBC on already. Early testing stages, but progress is being made.

It seems that some have everything working again on 4.2 firmware. It looks like they used IOS250.

Their is allot happening in this thread HERE and HERE.

I also read (don't know how credible the info is) that Waninkoko is working on a 4.2 updater.

UPDATE: I was reading deeper into the GBATemp thread and it seems there is a way to update to 4.2 and still have Bootmii, Homebrew Channel, IOS222/223/249 still working.

As well Preloader has already released Preloader .30 for 4.2 support and DOP-IOS has released a new version for 4.2 support.

I am still not going to update yet but it looks like things are coming along nicely.

Unbelievable these guys get done so quickly. Nintendo hasn't seen the last of the home-brew hackers!

I need to read the forums alot more. Had no idea about 4.2, was upgrading a friend's wii (to 4.1 I thought) and much to my suprise it wasn't. Well I got HBC and Bootmii, which is a start, but nothing else seems to be working at the moment. TBR, Wadmanager, etc all fail. Oh well patience is a virtue they say, so he will have to wait until something hits.

there's a new hackmii installer now from bootmii.org. i recommend to install it right away, because it will not get deleted if you updated to 4.2. also, for those who have boot2 bootmii, you can reinstall it again.

http://bootmii.org

http://hackmii.com/2009/09/silly_games/

but the best is not to update.

You should have used Waninkoko 4.2 updater instead. IOS222/223 and IOS249 still work.

ive just been given a wii and asked to zelder it! having not been on the scene for a while it reports it is at 4.2e does that mean its too late to do anything to it? other than hard mod (chip) it?

having read other posts it seams my question has been answered and its no :o( but not to discount possible future methods. while the ussual answer on forums is to read before you post my question was about a virgin wii on 4.2 and not updating a previously modded wii (thats what most posts seem to be about)
thanks anyway, im sure larry will be along any moment to either confirm or correct me and then tell me off for not doing enough searching before i post ;o)

Nick
