send it to MS. thats the real way of fixing RROD. other than that, the only permanent way of fixing it is to just get rid of the console. then you will never get it again.

Come talk with us on efnet at #elitemods !!! or just click ME

ALSO, DO NOT SEND ME MESSAGES ON LIVE REGARDING MODDING CONSOLES, OR HOW I PLAYED A CERTAIN GAME EARLY. I WILL NOT RESPOND. I WILL INSTEAD DELETE YOUR MESSAGE, AND BLOCK ALL COMMUNICATION FROM YOU. JUST SEND ME A PM ON HERE.

Is it an original Xbox or an elite?
I have recently fixed my original grey xbox 3 red rings by buying an X-clamp kit off ebay, they cost around 5 quid. Easy to fit, takes about 45 minutes.

Firstly check the rings on your xbox as different light patterns mean different faults. Also check the code of the fault, you do this by turning the xbox on then hold sync and press the eject button 4 times. Each time you press eject the rrod will respond, so maybe 1 light will flash, then 4 etc. I know that the x-clamp kit fixes 4-1-4-2 and 4-4-2-4. So record your code and check it on the internet to see what the problem is (additionally for some over-complicated and unecessary reason most people refer to 4 lights as number 0. So the light pattern 4-4-2-4 would be the "0020 fault". Pointless but keep an eye out for that).

Assuming its a RROD error code and not an external fault (like power supply etc) then you should buy and x-clamp kit. You can get a complete kit if you dont already have the necessary equipment at home. This comprises of;
- A sachet of heatsink compound, also known as thermal paste/ HP grease etc. All the same thing.
- 8 spring washers
- 8 nylon washers (there are many arguments over whether metal or rubber washers are better but different fixers use different materials. Each seller will tell you the other isnt good so ignore their lies)
- 8 bolts

additionally if you dont already have the following at home, get a kit including
- T8 and T10 torx bits

This will probably add £1 onto the price but they are essential if you dont already have them.

When you get the kit look up on youtube "how to open an xbox360" and use your kit and torx bits to open it up, very easy to do just make sure you have a container for all the screws you take out. This will void your warranty as you will have to peel off the hologram, although for about a tenner you can buy another warranty sticker and essentially restore your warranty (search them on ebay).

Then when the xbox is open type in youtube "how to fix rrod". I followed the videos made by FixYourOwnXbox, as he gives accurate instructions and gets everything on camera without it shaking about like all the others seem to do.

Before you spend your money watch the videos, take in what you have to do and make sure you listen to everything he says beforehand, that way, when you open the xbox up you dont have to keep running back and forth to the PC to watch the video again.

Lastly, if you do this it might be a good idea to take the disc out as the xbox is going to be turned over a few times which may scratch the disc. To do this take your faceplate off and use a flattened paper clip to put the lever beneath the disc tray, it should pop the tray out. There are loads of videos on this on ebay, easy to do.

I would definitely advise going for the xclamp kit if your warranty has ran out or if you dont want to pay Microsoft to come round and fix a fault that they shouldn't have let happen in the first place (the clamps inside the xbox are laughably shoddy).

Any questions PM me.

also forgot to say on the youtube video fitting the xclamp kit toward the end he disconnects the fan and overheats the xbox in order to run the solder. This should be a last resort, I didnt need to do this part, before you do this, connect the fan, turn the xbox on and see if it works. The rrod had gone on mine and it was green again. If you still have the rrod then go ahead and follow his instruction but dont leave it heated for too long. Most rrod xboxes should work once the heatsink compound has been applied and the heatsinks are properly attached.

Also dont do the "towel trick" or the "penny trick" or any other shortcut methods that are advocated on youtube
