Ok basically I tried to upgrade my psp to ver 4.05 in order to play this new game (on UMD), but it wont let me do it and comes up with error DADADADA.
I got my PSP in China and the guy who sold it to me set it up so that I could play games through my memory cards using ISO files.
The current software is 3.10 OE-A.
Questions are:
How can I upgrade to 4.05?
If i do upgrade, will I still be able to play my games off of memory card using ISO files?
I am sure all these questions have been answered before but i'm new to the PSP world and cant make too much sense from what I have found off the net!
Any help would be much appreciated.

upgrading the firmware from custom to normal will block stick games upgrading to the newest custom firmware should help you play your newer games off umd and stick.
see my list of error codes below in my link

Thanks for your reply.
I couldnt make too much out of the error codes, and obviously mine just comes up with "DADADADA"
Now, what is the current custom firmware? And how do I install it?

DADADADA is an error code that occurs when you try to update a PSP on custom firmware to a PSP with official firmware. You'll need to downgrade to firmware 1.50 and then upgrade to 4.05 if you want to go with official firmware. UPGRADING TO OFFICIAL FIRMWARE WILL MAKE YOU LOSE THE CAPABILITIES OF PLAYING GAMES OFF THE MEMORY STICK
I suggest that you install the latest custom firmware which is 5.50 GEN-b

This new firmware will allow me to play games off the stick and new games via a umd?
Exactly how do i install it? I guess via the stick?
I would love to learn more about the capabilities of the PSP... where do most download games from?

I can't tell you where to download games from, its against forum rules. All I can say is "torrents".
As for installing the firmware, since you're on such an old firmware you'll have to update it several times. See if you can figure it out through Google and if not I'll guide you step by step.
This new firmware, 5.50 GEN b is still "old" considering that the new official PSP firmware is 6.10. Don't upgrade to that because you'll loose all homebrew capabilities. Some new games will need to be patched to work and some won't work properly but the majority of games work fine. I believe all the new games are already patched to work on 5.50 GEN b

Just a note of thanks - I stumbled on this post and my PSP has the same firmware and error message!
However, I have not been able to get either of my new UMDs to work at all either before or since. End War and Sims 2. Will be interested to see how my .iso go. Any hints on getting the UMDs to work again is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for help to date - installed seemlessly!

Are these official UMDs or ISOs? What firmware are you on?

Sorry - A further question. Do I need to be running a particular official version software before I update to 5.50b firmware? (Does this make me a SPAMBOT?)

No, You're not a spambot. I'm one of those people that'll help you until you get the answer, not someone who keeps saying "Google It" (I've had that experience and it's really frustrating)
To upgrade to 5.50 GEN b you will need to be running a compatible custom firmware in order to upgrade. Let me know what custom firmware you are on and I'll give you the steps to upgrade to 5.50 GEN b.

5.50 Official or 5.50 GEN-B? Both have a completely different process.

OK - LOVE the Hellcat Recovery Flasher - simple... have the 500.pbp in the right place.... the software stalls when it gets to "Extracting special updater .PRX"
It is just sitting there doing NOTHING!
Obviously I have turned machine off and on again and tried it again through the Hellcat software but same problem :(.
What am I missing?
I have appreciated your input to date by the way! 42 year old Dad fixing machine up for son.... and myself :)

What type of memory stick are you using? Is it a generic one or a Sony one? Check this way:
-Go to the Video tab.
-Hit Triangle and go to Information
-Please tell me what the User Capacity is, Free Space and MagicGate.

whew im glad i got here wen i did. upgrading 2 550 genb2 is good idea for isos and ull just lose "some" homebrew i could still use gpsp and bookr also HC's RF still worked, thats wat i used 2 downgrade back 2 500.
anyways theres a guide in my sig also UMDGen and yoshihiros decryptor 2patch ur 600 isos 2run on 550
guide for patching http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-149/...w_games-803375/
itll work the upgrade guide is in my link and is idiot proof and they come with the eboot downloads so noobs can use it 2. the worst that can happen is u brick and i havnt heard of sum1 bricking tryin 2 upgrade. and if u do i hav guide 2help u make mms and pandoras batt so, we got ur back lol.
just make sure u upgrade in order 2 5.50 gen-a, gen-b, gen-b2.
and on b2 ur sys set wnt say 5.50 GEN-B2, itll say 5.50 GEN-B(FULL) but as long as u see the gen-b2 upgrade program on ur psp say "done with success" then ur running b2 and then u can play ur games
