Replace D3 drive with drive that ISN'T D3?

OK so I broke the dvd-rom drive in my Wii. It's a long story. Anyways, I can't find a replacement d3 drive so I was wondering if it was possible to replace it with a d2c drive or something similar that IS available. I don't want to spend the money only to find out that it isn't compatible. I have an LU64 system if that makes any difference.
I tried searching to see if this was already answered previously but my search turned up nothing.

AFAIK, all Wii drives are interchangable.
