There are a few things you need to do before sending it in to Sony.

1) Is the green BRD light on while the console is on?
2) Is the drive making any sound when you power on the console?
3) Can you stick the disc in fully or partially?

If 1&2 are yes, you more than likely need to open up your BRD and put the gears back in their track. There is also a click at the front end of the drive that allows the disc to slide in and out, if that is out of place your CD obviously will not insert.

I have the same problem with a broken PS3 I bought. If I pull the drive apart and load a disk from the top it will play fine, but the drive will not load/eject (motor doesn't move). I assume I need a new control board, but am having trouble finding the right one (it says BMD-031 on it, from a CECHL01 machine).

I bought another BR drive and put in that BMD-031 board and it wouldn't load disks either, sounded like the laser was scanning for a disk inside - i never popped the top to manually load a disk since I didn't want to jack up a drive I might be putting back on ebay.

I found a BMD-006 board on ebay, but the connectors are different, so I doubt that will work. It's amazing how much the hardware is changing inside the machine...
