ok, here is the deal, i have been able to successfully mod Benq's and Samsung drives. guy came to me with lite on drive, so i searched, and there is all these different methods. so i was gonna get the CK3 setup but the place i was purchasing from was sold out at the time so i was going to get the USB 360 XTRACTOR/powerdongle. ok, so o3 weeks later package comes in, and i guess i clicked add to cart on the wrong thing so i ended up with the 360 xtractor spear add-on and a power dongle.
So, i have seen that you can make your own key extractor.....
My question is.. Can i turn the spear into a usb extractor. and if anyone has the wiring schematic for the spear?? its a 5 pin connector and i think usb is 4 so would it even be possible to make this work? i only have a basic knowledge of electronics like soldering and wiring and such and very basic schematic readings.
So in a nut shell, i want to turn the 360 XTRACTOR SPEAR ADD-ON into a USB KEY XTRACTOR. i found the wiring schematic for usb cable, and the spears' wires are the same color with an additional yellow, yeah i know colors could mean squat but..... i just dont want to send the spear back cuz it took forever for package to get here, or if someone could send me a link on how to make a usb key extractor without using the DB9 to usb converter, just bypassing the entire db9 connector. Thanks

I dunno if youve looked at this thread (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/767988) but basically your spear is like the equivalent of the pen spring. dont knw what the dongle is, you might be able to power a home made probe with it or something though. so you should probably either make your own or get the xtractor so you can use your spear. also did you check what firmware you have? if you have the newest one you dont even need the probe. abou the db9 i was looking at that too but im pretty sure the only way is a converter otherwise there wouldn't be the need for such a thing. good luck

well from what i was reading is that the new firmware for lite on drives dont need the probe.the version on the dvd drive is the old one that needs a be extracted, the reason i ask about converting it to a usb because i saw this thing in my search ( http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=685470 ) which on some forums people have been having success. so if the probe is like the pen-spring i just need to know which wires are what and hook up appropriately??

interesting, i hadnt seen that. but ya definitely looks like it could work even to make one. jus took a look at a usb diagram and basically its a 5v, a ground, and the data. should be able o rig something up.
if you do that though theres really no point in using the spear, youd be better off because of size with just the needle from the spear or a needle like in that thread you showed me. just seems like too much hassle to figure out what color coding those xtractor guys used...

Im right there with ya, been trying to figure this out for a couple days now. If I can just figure how to wire the D-/D+ wire's of the usb to the npn I think all will work fine. I have been looking for a usb/db9 pinout to see what "D-/+" goes to pin 2 on the DB9. I see these simple looking devices all over the forums and even Ebay, but nobody wants to share their little secret while there is a dollar to be made. So sad really, lol

theres no way to get around the usb to serial connection because the tx(r707) on the board is a serial signal. its not the same as d+ or d- thats found in usb cables.this was explained to be by someone that makes their own probes ands sells them on ebay.
im gonna try to find our email correspondence

well, Im still stumped because the pictures of the item they sell on ebay as a usb probe is just a usb cord with electrical tape around the end with a needle hanging out? So unless they went out and found Rick Moranis and convinced him to use his shrinking machine for their DB9 I dont see how the above makes sense. I am dumb though, so who knows.....

that same guy, that you see selling that item is the one i had the emails with. he said that he gets those cables in bulk, they are not regular usb cables, they are usb to serial cables(he just snips the serial end off), and the conversion chip is in the usb end of the cable. and he connects a pin/needle/probe to the Tx wire. i'm still looking for the emails. but i dont think i will considering i just did a clean install of windows, i thought i backed up my emails. i could only rely on his info at that moment because i tried connecting a needle to both the d- and d+ wires, and i got nothing. i even shorted a pc doing this. so be careful if you are attempting this. windows said something about not being able to recognize the usb device, and with his explanation it seemed reasonable

theres already a tut on this, check the sticky... and jrouse depending on which cable you have, dont just expect to be able to do like that guy on ebay did. if you snip the db9 end off, be prepared to put it back on. the guy on ebay says the ones he gets are 3 wires only, the usb to serial cable i got from ebay was five wires(like a regular usb cable). i snipped the db9 end off and had to put it back on and then followed the tut in the sticky to make my own diy probe
