Hey hey,

First off I'd like to say I'm a complete novice at Xbox 360 modding/flashing!
I got one of the first Xbox 360's on the market back when it first launched (also its the one with a Hitachi drive) and since then I sent it to a friend who could put a modchip in it, and so far it has worked as a charm, but recently I have been getting the "Play DVD" error, and I can't seem to fix it.

I'm using Verbatim DVD +R DL discs, the layerbreak is the right one, and honestly I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Xbox's.
Now I'm wondering if it's because the chip is too old that it can't handle the new games or not? And if i should try and flash it instead (would that mean i would have to remove the chip first, because I'm not good with small sensitive things :/)

It could be there is a completly different reason as to why I get the "Play DVD" error, but I'm using the same settings for burning games etc. that I've suceeded with in the past.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I'm not sure how a flash and modchip work together...

If possible though, I would highly recommend using a dvd flash.

What type of modchip is it? AFAIK most xbox 360 modchips will not play wave 3 games. Ask your friend if he can update it, if not I would recommend removing the modchip and flashing the drive.

Also it could be a weak laser, but I'm not 100% sure.

Well I honestly have no idea what modchip it is, might be the NME one, but not sure at all, and i really aint much for fidling with the chip and my friend is out of country for about a year or so lol.
That's why I'm wondering if I can flash it, even though the chip is still in it, or would they somehow conflict when the chip tries to start and the flash program is working :/

You mentioned the laser, but wouldn't that mean that most of my games would be unplayable, because so far it has only been what I believe to be wave 3 games that I can't play.

Yea, you basically will need to update the modchip somehow, I would wait for your friend to get back to do it for you imo, but if you want to learn how to upgrade it, you would have to figure out what type of modchip it is and basically have to figure out how to update the modchip yourself with the right tools. I'm sure you can play all wave games but anything above wave 3, so if thats the case then yes, it is more than likely that the modchip needs an update. Hope this helps.

Due to modchips not being develloped on anymore there probably is no update.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Aye, so seeing as the possibility of an modchip update is slim-to-non, what about just flashing my Xbox? Question here is, can it be done without removing the chip first?

So does anybody have any idea if I can flash it with a modchip still in it or will it conflict? (bump)

You best be is to just try it - flash the drive and leave the mod chip in. But your "play dvd" error could be because the mod chip is gay or your laser is dieing.

So I would:
-Flash the drive and try the games that aren't working - SAVE YOUR ORIGINAL FIRMWARE!!!
-If it doesn't work then see if you can remove the mod chip with out F'ing something up
-If none of the above work then do a POT calibration.
-If after the POT cal. the drive doesn't work or only works sometimes then buy a Benq replacement drive on ebay for about $25 and spoof/flash it.

PSP-modded, ps2 fat-modded w/fliptop and swap magic, PS3-YLoD, DS Lite w/ Acekard 2i, Xbox 360 - JTAGed with no dvd-rom

just try it. If it doesn't work, then revert it back.
