Have a problem with an xbox 360 where after a couple of minutes the game (happens on all games)freezes or crashes.I have no red rings or flashing lights ,when this happens the green light on the console front is constant green as it should be.
It has been to a repair shop twice but they give up in the end.

Any ideas???apprecited thanks.

Unfortunately the date sticker on the machine says 2006,its just out of warranty, and microsofts extended warranty.
It has never been hacked or chipped or flashed.

your console is honestly probably on its way out.

I would maybe see if you can call them and they'll do it anyways.

Otherwise maybe do x-clamp fix or wait until it does rrod and then do it.

I had EXACTLY the same issue on a 2006 console. I read elsewhere that this can be caused by the ram chips becoming loose from the board when the machine has been on a while and heated up. I asked about it on here and didnt get much reply.

I ended up buying some thermal pads for the ram chips (similar to the eraser trick) and have had no issues since.

Strangley enough the first time the xbox went in for repair the company whom fixed it(or i thought had)did say the problem would have lead to the RROD syndrome but they never actually told me what they had done.I did email microsoft when this first started to happen, unfortunately they told me it was outside their extended warranty.(which i think is 3 years now).
I am away on a business trip today but i will strip it down when i get back and check for loose ram chips etc.
Thanks for the advice.

Honestly you won't see any difference on the ram because they're all bga chips.

Think of it this way There are maybe 50-100 little points on the bottom of your ram. Now if 2 points don't have continuity to the board the xbox won't see anything wrong it and it will run as normal (just like a computer does). Now when the xbox tries to use that memory it fails and the xbox doesn't know what to do so it freezes. If you were running windows you would now have the blue screen of death, but instead with the xbox it will give you rrod 0102 digital backbone error.

To fix it depends on your console version. The first 360's (xenon boards 203w psu) are plagued with design flaws. Here's a good demo pic.

You can see the xclamps cause stress and also the 2 standoffs in the middle are pushing up on the board. If you have an xenon board you need to level or sand down those stand offs. After that you need to replace the xclamps. You should also try applying just a little bit of pressure to the bottom of the ram chips. They usually call this the penny fix but you want to use a little bit more flexable material. I've used pennies and washers before but now i found a rubber pad works perfect. Make sure it's about 2.5-3mm tall. You also want to do the xclamp replacement where you drill though the case so it holds the board completely flat.

Here's a good tutorial for that
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/rin...x-clamp_fix.htm

With lammas xclamp fix and the sandoffs sanded down it will look like this.

Follow that tutorial to overheat and that should fix your freezing issues.

If you have problems overheating the xbox go out and buy a thermometer with a probe. Stick the probe on the gpu while overheating and modify the airflow to get the gpu as hot as you can. I can usually get the gpu so hot the console will display 2 red lights with the fan focused on the cpu.

Anyway it's all trial and error, and the people that say this doesn't work are the ones that didn't get it right and gave up.

Edit: I should add that microsoft redesigned the heatsinks for the later versions. If your gpu heatsink looks like this replace it with one that looks like this. You can find them pretty cheap here.

THanks for that C4ARN1 i will try that when i get back to the uk,I would of thought that microsoft would have done this as a design fault, but again it was outside of their warranty.Crap eh??such is life.
Rather than chuck the console away I will try anything??

Thanks

Neilcolt, this is from a post by twistedsymphony on xbox-scene forums:

E71: Dashboard Error - Error within Xam.xex: possibly a dashboard update error, Check below for instructions. If that does not work there is no other solution and the console must be sent back to MS for repair.

Clear All Installed Game Updates and Console Cache
Go to the "system" blade
Select "memory"
Press Y on the HD symbol
Press X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X
A message will appear saying: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"
Select Yes

Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error.
With the console off, press and hold the sync up button (the small white one)
While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console
Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.
During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.

Other than that, I can't help mate.

Well at the very least, save your DVD drive from the console. You never know when you will need a spare one.
