Hello, my son has recently figured out how to pirate games, and i'm not to happy with it. I flashed our xbox a while ago, and have been backing up our games. I don't believe in pirating. I work most of the day and can't keep an eye on him all the time. So here comes the question.
Is there anyway to make an xbox run only games I make?
One idea i've been thinking about is is there a way to put some code in the firmware that the game must run in order to boot up games on that xbox. Something a little less out there is maybe making the cd run the dvd key of the drive to boot up a game on that xbox.
One other idea is maybe abusing older firmware. Is there a way to say use Ixtreme 1.4 or 1.5 and then patch the games for them to be safe and to run etc. So that if he were to run a game with the 3rd wave (all new ones right?) they wouldn't boot. But i could put some code in the game to make it run 3rd way and be safe online.
These are just the two ideas i've had. I'm no where near as smart as all you guys on this community so i figured i would put this out there and see if there is a way.
Even if the way is EXTREMELY hard to do, if its possible, please point me in the right direction and ill see if i can follow up on it. Please advise.
Jason he flashed his xbox so he can play backups so the originals don't get destroyed. Obviously you haven't been reading any other forums where people don't pirate copywrited material, why are you here?
Anyway to answer the question i really don't think it's possible firmware wise. But if he's downloading them in your house and burning them on your pc and using your discs just lock up the discs somewhere safe. You can also search the history of the browser and figure out where he's downloading the games from then add it to the blocked list in the broswer and enable a password. You can also block the site in the router. Also for the dvd burner you can go into the device manager and right click your burner. Choose disable and you won't be able to use the burner anymore. To use it just go back into device manager and enable it. It should be pretty simple but your son won't know.
I'd say if he can get past all of those i would just enable a startup password on the computer. If he is getting the discs somewhere else just make him watch as you put them in the microwave lol. I guess i'm out of ideas, anyway hope my suggestions help.
This is a serious option: choose an ISP with a low capped monthly usage quota (say 5 gigs) and ask them to either cut you off if you exceed or drop you down to dialup speeds (thats what all the ISP's over here do). That will stop him being able to download 7gig games.
Other than that a firewall as previously suggested, that blocks anything that is not web or mail could be useful especially if its built in to your modem/router as you can't bypass that without buying another router.

Don't listen to this guy, he obviously doesn't know anything.
Like said, it would be a no go on the firmware hacking. If you really have the knowledge on how to hack the firmware, then you should be working on updating any versions of ixtreme as they need it.
Plus it would change the CRC's on the games and they wouldn't match. Simply put that wouldn't work.
You really don't have an option except as described, disabling a burner or something like that. Blocking where he is downloading the games.
how about this. tell your kid if he does it, the xbox gets thrown away? or ground him, or take away his computer privileges. now wouldnt that be some parenting.
