i'm considering putting up an ad on craigslist to get it out there that I can flash xbox 360's, for a price, and even provide back ups for them. i dont have my own shop or anything so i kinda feel uncomfortable bringing strangers to the house to get their xbox flashed. i have kids on top of that.

how do many of you that provide services like this deal with it. how are you set up to handle it. i even get a bit paranoid, that the person asking could be a policeman or something. IDK

First of all- take out the all CAPS title in this thread.

Second of all- do not provide backups with the flash install. That is just beyond stupid.

Third of all- if you feel the least bit uncomfortable and paranoid then do not do it.

I myself do offer modding services but only in forums.

Do not provide at all. The idea of flashing your console is to play backups of games that you already OWN. This way you can keep the original copy in mint condition.

The legality of modding is in the grey area though but I do not want to debate this as it can go on forever.

A few online companies seel xbox 360 backups and they get away with it. But they have a disclaimer on their site saying they only sell backups to people who already own the game, but do not have the required hardware to back it up by themselves. I wouldn't recommend doing this though.

@ OP you should make sure you are comfortable with flashing all xbox 360 dvd drives. If you make a mistake and erase the firmware before you dump the dvd key you could lose more money than you make.

There is no way that is legal. Even if not in the US, I would imagine you have to prove that you own the game, but I don't see how a business could legally make a defense with that...

maybe they just haven't gotten sued yet.

Here's the disclaimer of one of the sites:

Quote:
we provide a service to make the legal backup copy in accordance with the above statement, to those users who do not have the ability or resources to make the backup copy themselves. By using the services provided here, you are stating that you own a legal retail copy of the game in question and that the copy is to be used for personal use only. Furthermore, you agree not to use the services to resell, distribute, rent, lend, or lease the game(s) in question, and that if you cease to own the retail copy(s), you agree to immediately destroy and discard the backup copy
That site has been around atleast since april 09 (from what I remember). There is a lot more sites like them, they all seem to be getting away with it.

To the OP,

I offer xbox 360 services on craigslists to make a little extra cash as well. I just really stick with the repairs though due to the legalities involved with flashing a console.

I have kids like you and I typically meet up with the people some where near by to make the exchange.

There are a couple guys in my area that do this on craigslist for $40+. I thought about undercutting them with a $20-25 but it's not worth the hassle with the law or any idiots.

Take your pick, there's more of them out there aswell.

Most of them that I have seen are in the UK (including the one I took the disclaimer from). They sell them in PAL format, so it would only be useful for people in UK, Australia, etc. I've also seen a few from Australia and I saw one that was based in the US, but I did not bookmark it.

it not that i dont feel comfortable flashing xbox 360's. i'm able to do so in about 10 mins, unless a problem like getting it into vendor mode arises. what i'm hesistant on though is providing the service without having like a shop of my own instead of my house. and i figure that these people i would deal with wouldnt just do an exchange at the nearby gas station, they would want to be where their xbox 360 is.

Yes most people would be uncomfortable with such an exchange, considering all that they have is your number. Uhm if you have kids and you aren't comfortable then you should not do it, or do it at the hours they arent home I guess. The best bet is to not do anything your uncomfortable with. Do what makes sense to you're common sense.
