Hi, I am wanting to get a PS3 but not until Christmas time. I will not have much time for it until then because I will be off and away from home. Anyways, I want a Ps3 that has a good size hard drive, has wireless and wired internet option, im not too sure of the point of having another OS on the ps3? so i dont care much about that feature.
I seen the ps3 slim I dont like the way it looks but idk. Just curious what you all would get looking at the deals, the bundle items that you can get. Let me know what your guys dream ps3 would be.
PS. How long will the 80gb and 160gb ps3 be around since there is now the 120gb slim?
I would recomend the thinline if you do not want linux. The only differences other than looks and hard disk capacity are as follows:
1st gen fat: 20/60GB, overheating issues and loud fans very common, supports PS2 games & Linux
2nd gen fat: More reliable, quiet and cool running than the first gen. Drops PS2 support, but still has Linux support.
1st gen thin: No PS2 or Linux support. Too soon to say if it is more reliable than the 2nd gen fat, but it should be. I have heard that disks get rather warm or even hot in the slimline because the hard drive is placed under bluray drive, but I have not heard of any failures or damaged disks because of this. If there are any serious issues, they should be known before Christmas time.
Hard drive capacities vary greatly, but they are all tiny. You can get a 500GB for $90, while the largest PS3 hard drive is a paltry 160GB. You can upgrade the hard drive without voiding the warantee, and it is very easy. Most users do not need too much space, as most games only use a couple GB, and there are not many good games available (I have had my 40GB over a year. Even with linux installed, I still have 9GB free)
My dream PS3 would be a 20GB or 60GB fat, with the hard drive removed and replaced with a ESATA adapter connected to a 20TB redundat array. Since it is the 20GB/60GB, I would also want some custom made heatsink/fan combos so that it does not overheat while making a tornado sound.
More realisticly, I would want a 40/80/120GB FAT with a ESATA converter attached to a pair of 1.5TB drives in RAID1.
I am about to put a new 500GB in my old 40GB FAT...this seems to be about the best I will get without external bits or custom made heatsinks.
If you don't want linux, then you would be fine with a slimline. You can get a nice quality 500GB hard drive for $90 shipped...and this price will just continue to drop.
Wow you were very detailed i appreciate it. Thanks for the info. I will do some more research. Kind of leaning towards the 80gb or 160gb. 80 seems nice because of the ps2 playback. 160 is nice because of the 2 games and bugger drive but i now know you can swap the drive for bugger one so i will take that into consideration. I watched a few ps3 fat and ps3 slim comparisons on youtube. not sure if i like the look of the slimline. But should looks determine to get it or not if it performs better? i dont know personal preference i guess. Once again thanks for the info. :)
