I modded my wii over a year ago with a WiiKey modchip.
I rarely had a read error problem.
Lately my Wii isn't reading backups properly. I keep getting a black screen and the error reading disc message. Could it be a laser issue?

That's certainly what it sounds like. Are your old backups having this issue as well?

I ran a couple older ones and they worked. Zelda original has the same error and it has no damage on the disc itself. I noticed the last 2 I burnt were actually DVD+R. Those were Wii sports resort and Bully. Wii Sports works 90% of the times and Bully is really tough. Could be the +Rs. I'll buy new DVD -Rs and burn a few games and see how they work.

Yeah, I only ever use Verbatim DVD-Rs and have never had an issue. So that's probably a good plan.

If that doesn't work.... why not try to install homebrew and get a usb loader? This might be an alternative solution to your problems.

I've always found burning discs to be annoying. Besides, wouldn't playing off a harddrive prolong the life of your laser?

My drive burned out too. I tried a laser pot tweak to no avail. I use usb loader for all wii games but still don't have a solution for all my GC games :(.

I'm experimenting with dolphin emu on my computer but I can't get it to run 100% so I can play GC games.
