Hello everyone at Afterdawn,

I have a 4.1U softmoded Wii by following the earlier tutorial to do it as posted here.
I saw the 4.2 revision and tried to update the Wii shop channel to 4.2 by running the 4.2 Shop channel app and then I finished with a semi bricked Wii!
When I turn it on I have a garbled screen where you can hardly read that the Wii files are corrupted.
I can get into preloader 0.29 and I did a NAND backup when I followed the 4.1 tutorial and have it at hand.
The only issue here is that I can't get either into the HBC or the System Menu and I couldn't install Bootmii as Boot2, only as an IOS so is not accessible now. My S/N is LU55.
So the question is how can I run Bootmii in order to restore my NAND under these conditions?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

So you can't run the HBC from the Preloader menu?

Thanks for such a quick reply.

That's right, whenever I try to go to the HBC it says that the channel is not installed and when I choose to go to the System Menu I get the garbled screen that says that the files on the Wii are corrupted.
However, I can load apps from the SD but I don't which apps should I run. I managed to run the Bott Mii configuration app but not the Bott Mii app itself.
Thanks again for your help.

Since you have bootmii installed as an IOS, you can download this file. Afterwards, place the dol file in the root directory of your SD card. Now,fire up Preloader and install the the said file. Once installed, you can run it by going through the same steps but instead of pressing A, this time you press 1. It should take you straight to bootmii.

Can yuo explain what this files is and what it does? Does it reinstall bootmii so you can run in from preloader to restore the nand?

So in the future if I needed to restore my nand, I have bootmii as IOS and preloader 0.29 installed.... How would I do it? Boot into preloader then do what? Thanks

With the new Hackmii installer, the HBC autoboot in Preloader is no longer working. This small Preloader plug-in bypasses HBC and takes you directly to bootmii. The file does not reinstall Preloader. The file resides inside Preloader itself. Thus, Preloader and Bootmii need to be installed before you can even start using this (Bootmii Booter). I've included a link below explaining it more in details.

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Bootmii_Booter

If you can't autoboot to HBC and you have Bootmii installed as an IOS, install this dol file by going to Preloader=>Load/Install FIle. From there, you should see Bootmii_Booter.dol, the file that you have placed in the root directory of you SD card. Now, select it and press A to install the file. Once installed, you can go through the same motions but instead of pressing A, this time you press 1. Bootmii_Booter should run, and in a few seconds will take you directly to Bootmii.

I didn't even take the new hackmii installer in consideration.

More then likely the reason preloader can not find the HBC is because it is looking for the old ID that HBC used. The ID has been changed due to 4.2 firmware deleting the previous ID used for HBC.

Did you ever install a patched version of IOS60 after installing Preloader?

Try doing this.

Go to settings in Preloader. Then go down to System menu IOS: keep pressing right on the D-pad till you see 36 after that go to save settings.

After it saves the settings press B on the Wimmote then go up to System menu to see if it will now boot into it. If it loads the menu see if you can run the HBC from there.

Let me know if this works.

Hello again Larrylje,

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier, I was out of town and away of my Wii... :-(

Here are my results: I wasn't able to run BootMii since it always asked for different files which I placed on the SD (I used a small one, 512MB to avoid mistakes) and it always said that the files were not found. Regardless if I put it on the path indicated by the BootMii loader.

Anyway, I did what you suggested changing IOS 60 to IOS 36 on preloader and it worked like charm! My Wii is back! No need to do a NAND restore but I made a backup of it anyway. An the Shop channel works again (updated to 4.2 which is what started this thread).

Almost everyhing work as before, and I say almost because of the following issues now:
I had some Wiiware games on my SD which are not recognized anymore (for this I use a 4GB SD). It tells me that the inserted memory is not a valid SD but, if I go to the HBC it fully recognizes ALL the apps I keep on the very same SD... I will try to back it up and re-format it to see if that solves it or will re-install all the Wiiware apps I used to have on it no big deal on this.

I use dopeIOS as mentioned on the tutorial and Super Mario Galaxy runs by using BackupGamma, I can't load it via the Disc Channel.

I can't run Mercury Meltdown yet and I have no clue why this happened, I discussed this on another post.

Is this the final setup? Keep IOS36 on preloader or should I install an updated version of IOS 60? On the wiki of DopeIOS is said that if IOS60 is installed then preloader has to be re-installed too.
Any advice on this?

Thanks again for your support recovering my Wii.

Run reinstall Preloader .29 using Homebrew Channel. After you reinstall it go to Preloader settings again and change the IOS36 back to IOS60 and see if that lets you boot IOS60 system menu. If it does then you should have loading VC/WiiWare from SD Card back again.

Hello again larrylje,

Thanks for all the good advice, I installed preloader 0.29 after the installation of IOS60 and then I restarted the Wii. I went to preloader again, changed from IOS 36 to IOS60 on the settings menu and after restart my Wii is back.
System menu loads fine and recognizes my previous Wii Ware apps on the SD. Mario Galaxy loads from the Disc Channel now but the Shop channel doesn't work as it asks for an update. I prefer this setup so I will leave it that way until a safer upgrade procedure to 4.2 is known.
I tested it with other new games (i.e. A boy and his blob) and works great.
One problem now is that I can't get to the HBC from preloader, only from System menu. I have HBC 1.6.
I still can't manage to load Mercury Meltdown even using backup Gamma R7. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for all the help!
