New Xbox console to use AMD GPU?

article published on 15 October, 2009

Via a speculative post on their site, Fudzilla has started the rumor mill up again by stating that AMD has already won the GPU deal for the upcoming Xbox console (likely in 2012). Says the full post: "We've learned from industry sources that AMD / ATI has already won the GPU deal for the next generation XboX console. It looks like Microsoft was happy with first Xenos GPU and it wants ... [ read the full article ]

Hopefully by delaying it 2 more years, they can make a more powerful console, and add an integrated HD player, depending on what format reigns supreme that year; most likely still blu-ray. And who knows, we might be able to play games like Crysis on very high settings, other than a PC.

I've read on several occasions from several sources, that Nvidia is slowly moving away from the "gamer" demographic of video cards. While ATI are continuing to pursue that demographic. So it makes sense that the next wave of consoles would sport an ATI chip.

What is Nvidia moving towards (out of curiosity)?

It's interesting actually. A while back, most people would choose ATi for performance desktop computing (i.e. CAD, CGI...) and nVidia for gaming. Now it seems as though ATi is continuously pushing to market their GPU's for gaming (mostly) while nVidia is sort of maintaining their previous market while continuously marketing CUDA for performance desktop applications. In other words, they're leveling out and competing almost neck to neck in almost all areas.

On topic, I wasn't surprised by this. Would they go with nVidia after their disputes with the original XBOX GPU... I don't really think so. So if this ends up being true, I guess that means the next Playstation will incorporate nVidia to keep their current trend as well?

While the 'article' seems bogus, it only makes sense if you plan to have a new device of similar design as the previous one (esp. for backwards compatibility) to use newer versions of the same type of hardware.

WOW. It was only last year nVidia beat ATi into the ground with it's faster product turnaround times, faster cards, and better future product lines. Then again, focusing on the few (gamers) during recessionary times is never good.

Looks like AMD did a few good things with ATi.

Lets hope nVidia cards effectivly become a newer version of a math co-processor...it would be sweet to be able to use ATI video with nVidia cuda.

World is "goin" to end, and you feel the need to post this? Should I start hording canned corn now?

The Xbox360 is already 4 years old. Bargain basement PC's have more processing power than the Xbox360. The new Xbox720 needs to have (and it needs to come out in 2011):
- 4 GB Video memory
- 16 GB RAM
- 8 CPU's
- Controllers on the CPU
