Looks like on the 360iso site a ton of people are getting banned, and the common theme seems to be Forza 3. It looks like the suspensions range from 1 day to 10 days, but all of the emails going out say it's a perma ban. Please be careful if you are playing it early.

When it broke a few hours ago everyone's accounts said that they would be reinstated anywhere from 10/17 to 10/30. After a few hours it updated and they are all permabaned. It's all gamertag's it seems though, not consoles which is good.

Don't worry folks, anyone who bought a copy early is ok. In general, if you got a receipt, play away. These are illegit copies we're hitting

That's from the Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox LIVE's Twitter page, so if they're only banning people who are playing pirated copies, the bans are likely to be permanent.

Yeah I just saw that on stepto's twitter page too. I am curious how they can tell, it appears there are 3 copies running around out there, but we only know 1 is legit for sure. I wonder if one of the files out there was a review copy. Glad I decided to wait.

Maybe they're just banning and asking questions later. I would assume that's why he said if you had a receipt you're fine. Because you can just show them and prove you didn't pirate it.

I can't say I know 100%, but there was a guy on 360 iso who drove like 2 hours to meet someone in NY who had a copy on craigslist. He had a ton of pics of it with his screen name, and had it upped just before the newsgroups did.

I think he did buy it because a lot of people said they would donate to him if he upped it then bailed on him and he was pretty upset. Seems like a lot of work with the pictures and such for him to have not had the retail copy.

So I've been reading the same has been happening with Borderlands, which seems odd considering how soon it will be out. Is there any truth to this?

It's because they're pirated copies, but if properly Stealth Patched then they are banning because it is being played before the release date. So it isn't "solely" piracy that's causing the bans.

heres some proof that of course M$ cannot tell. http://forums.xbox.com/29476424/ShowPost.aspx
StepTo is trying to scare people. Also with the new update you can no longer use unofficial xbox 360 hdds. You will not be able to access your profile or save data. Way to really shit on your customers M$.

hey when COD6 comes out make sure you play before release date, and post back here after you get banned and cry about it.

I really don't think they are talking about hdd (but that is just my thoughts). Way to many people have unwittingly purchased hdd for there 360 that is likely unofficial. Then turn around and purchase xbl and maybe even netflix to stream. I see that as creating a big class action possibility down the line for them. I may be wrong and do know there folks in legal has to be much smarter then me on this.

Is it only if you go online and play it that you might get banned ? I've played it with my gamertag, but not online and I haven't been connected to live...but is it detectable if I go onto Live with another, older game ? (That I've played Forza 3 I mean)

Haha. Good point. I will say is that now it is said it is the memory units, not the hard drives. As I thought was odd in the first place, no way to tell if the hdd is official or not. And I am definately not one of there customers, every thing I have is from ebay.

Since when is the hard drive not a memory unit? I can swear mine is used for storage.

If M$ start banning accounts instead of consoles,it might be a big deterrent for a lot of people who care about their gamerscore from modding their console. Having said that, a lot of people don't care about gamerscore and if accounts only get banned, then no need to buy a new 360. Though I think it is a once off. Why not ban a console they know is modded? If they know the owner is a regular live user, chances are he will buy a new one if they have done a lot with their profile. If they ban an account, people might jump ship to the ps3 to play multiplats online. The profile owner, though unlikely, may not be the console owner anyway and they ban the wrong dude. If M$ start banning both accounts and consoles, they will lose a significant amount of customers to Sony. Therefore, I think we won't see this happen a lot.

There's what... something over 11 million LIVE users. Banning consoles and/or accounts won't make a dent in the subscriber base.

And if you don't think this will happen a lot, look at the past. History speaks for itself. A lot of consoles were banned in each of the last ban waves. And now MS is banning accounts. Don't forget, when someone's account is banned not only do they lose their gamerscore (which as you say some people won't even care about), but they also lose all of their dlc, both free and paid for. And there's no recourse. Once you lose that dlc you paid for, it's gone. Period.

So what good reason would MS have to quit banning consoles and accounts?
