Moreover, what do you mean by "certain ones in a category"?
If you're talking about widescreen vs. fullscreen DVDs, it can upscale them however you choose. I believe the options are Normal (preserves aspect ratio), Full (fills the entire screen), Double (screen gets bigger by factor of 2), and... one other which eludes me.
Anyone know the actual quality of the upscale? say if i had a dvd and blu ray of the same film, im sure there would be a difference but it would be interesting to know how much.
Actually im going to do that, Ill take screenshots of a upscaled dvd and a bluray and post later.
If you read it, you can tell that it's not about the PS3 at all. However, it DOES have a bit of information on how well the PS3 does as a DVD player and upscaler.
Basically, it does a pretty good job upscaling. Not top of the line, but certainly better than most.
PS3DVDupscaling is very good when compaired to it's PS2 upscaling. The quality is on par with or better than just about anything in the sub-$400 range. As a bonus, Sony is always tweeking features with firmware updates, so it is likely that quality will get even better over time (it is already much better than it was at launch).
To give you an idea of how an upscaled DVD compairs with a bluray, imagine an image of a street made of bricks. The upscaled DVD will have all the bricks and all the brick edges as the bluray, but the bluray will have the pebbles in the cracks.
