My friend has just brought a PS3 console round to my house to see if i want to buy it.The only problem is that i cant get a picture through hdmi or component.I know about xbox 360's but not PS3's.Any help or info would be gratefully appreciated.

With the PS3 in standby (the light on front is red) mode, hold down the power button.

There'll be a few beeps - I don't know the exact pattern of beeps - and the PS3 will reset its video settings to 480i.

This will allow you to reconfigure it to whatever resolution you want.
