Can any one tell me what i am fundamentally doing wrong here!!!
I have fitted a wasabi DX chip to my wii console & all seems well. The problem i am having is when i run a burnt game in the console. When i get to the wii menu and start button page & press start the wii seizes up, the tv goes black, the handset switches off & the wii console will not switch off(the eject button works) i have to switch off the console on the wall to reset. The games i am downloading are off a torrent site in PAL, unzipped with winzip, the discs are DVD-R burnt very slowly with nero 7 & I've used imgburn, all this has given me the same results. A friend gave me a copied or downloaded game he got from a car boot sale & that worked ok, so this proves the chip is working. The only thing i have done to the console is in configuration, i have enabled the update blocker.
I would extremely grateful if anyone could shed any light on the matter.

The important piece that you haven't provided is what brand of media you are using.
Crappy media can cause your symptoms. So can bad .isos.
Did you try running one of your burns on someone else's modded Wii?

Thanks for your reply.I have been using Intenso DVD-R, if these are crappy can you suggest any better manufacturers DVD's. Also, does the max write speed on dvd's make a difference, some you can buy are 4x, some are 16x, what works best for the wii?

I have now tried burning the games with Verbatim DVD-R at 2x and 4x still with the same results, these are the latest wii games out and i have heard some games require a patch for the copy protection. If this is true, where can i download it and how do i use it.

The possibility of a bad .iso still remains. Unless you have tried your disc in someone else's modded Wii, or have a direct report that the .iso is good, you could be making burns of something that won't work.
Unless you rip your own .isos and have 100% confidence in their accuracy, there is no way of knowing.
I have since softmodded my Wiikey modded Wii and that provides a certain level of assurance as to whether it's the burn or the .iso.
I also rip my own .isos so I can determine whether or not .isos from a particular source are reliable or not.
As another example:
There is a certain Wii game out right now for which I have not been able to find a reliable working .iso. The .iso hangs in the same place every time, softmod or hardmod, with .iso from several different sources. I suspect that all of these different .isos were created from the same (bad) source. I plan to rip my own .iso and do an FC to see where the problem is. It could also be that this .iso doesn't work (well) on modded Wiis.

The only other option is to try to boot the game via a USB loader of some sort to really rule out if the problem occurs during the burning process because the .ISO file is being altered. Of course, you need a soft-modded system to accomplish this.

You said you rip your own isos! How is this done? Is it from the original DVD game? What software do you use?
All the games i have downloaded are from the same uploader, i am currently downloading new & old games from various uploaders to see what results i get.

there are certon dvd rom drives that can read wii/gc discs if you use rawdump they are as follows, but good luck trying to get one of these!
Hitachi LG GDR-8161b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-8162b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-8163b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-8164b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-H10NBLK (SATA)
Hitachi LG GDR-8082N - USB SLIM Portable Drive
the other option is using homebrew and Wii DVD Dumper to copy a disc straight to a usb drive as an iso.

I am now using Verbatim DVD-R discs and imgburn at burn speeds of 2x & 4x with some success. Games that have been out for a while seem to work ok, its the newer games, like guitar heros that still lock the wii on the start window. With these new games do they a small piece of software added at the burn stage to make them work.

Is there a chance that your system does not have the right IOS to run those games? Most new games use IOS 38, 53, or 55.

Don't take my word for it-but, I'm pretty sure that these ios's come from the original game discs. when you put them in your console they will ask for an update. Alternativly you can maybe softmod your wii and install them manually. Try Larry's 4.1 and below softmod guide, then google the ioses. Or still try Larry's guide and do what Pryme H said and use an usb loader (usb loader GX is in my sig for download)
Good luck.

Sorry about that. I'm not farmiliar with how to turn my url's into a one word link, so I can make it less lines.
As for the response to the update on the wii sport resort original disc...it is safe to do an update as long as it is from the same region as your console. If you have softmoded your wii. Not sure if the same goes for a chip mod.

If the game disc is from the same region as your Wii, it is O.K. to update.
Also, I do not believe that any of the game discs have system menu updates beyond 3.4, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
