Real Newbie: Convert DVD+Rw (Vob) to MPEG to edit

I need some help. I have some very very old VCR movies that I have put on a DVD+RW using a newly bought player/recorder. Now, I want to edit all these scenes into one decent movie. But I have found that the 2 DVD editing programs I have will not open .VOB files. Is there some way I can convert these so that the pictures and sound go into a format that my editing program can use. I'd really apprecite advice.
