Just to clarify- Im not talking about a hard drive for the Xbox.

My question is regarding storing downloaded ISOs on the PC. Currently I am downloading them to the PC, but memory is runnning low. I have just copied one ISO off my PC to the external hard drive (it is compressed in a RAR. file so it transferred over without FAT 32/ NTFS problems.)

Anyway, when I come to unzip the RAR. file on the external it is taking an age to extract. It is estimating 3 more hours, and its already been unzipping for 30 mins. The same RAR on my PC unzipped in about 20 minutes. My PC isnt USB 2 so I expect slow operation from it, but not 3 hours. So getting to my question;

When the external finally unzips and gives me the ISO and DVD, will this slowness also occur when I burn it on IMGburn? ISOs stored to my PC usually burn in 15 mins but I fear that the burn time will be prolonged much like the unzip has.

more than likely yes. i would just move everything back you PC, and then format your external to ntfs, and unzip them from your computer, and move them to your external. then when you want to burn one, move it back to the PC and burn. this way you dont run into any burn problems.

thanks for the info. I wasnt aware that you could format the hard drive to a certain format. Are you saying that 7GB games can be transferred to and from external to PC? Currently when I try to transfer anything over 4GB I get an error message saying clear some space on the hard drive (but it still fails if I have 100GB free on both the PC and external-which I have looked up and been told that it actually means that FAT32 and NTFS are incompatible and so cant transfer ISOs)

If I format the external to NTFS will it wipe it clear?

the error you are getting is bc your external is in fat32. it only supports files smaller than 4 gigs. if you make it ntsf it will allow 7 gig games. and yes it will wipe it clear.

ok, Im reading that you can convert to NTFS without losing all of the FAT32 data. Im going to try that, though I expect there will be problems and all my data will probably end up as either unreadable or be deleted.

If you aren't using USB 2.0 then obviously you need to update your stone age technology or get used to it being slow as fuck.

Haha, I could never be arsed transferring everything to a new machine. Its either a little time wasted on USB 1, or wasting days trying to get a new PC run like this. Im lazy, so sticking with the former is the preferred option.

wow your computer must be 10 years old then. That's like 500 in doggy years. Get a new board or pc, come on. Or buy a nice internal 500gb drive. They are cheap! I hope you're not modding 360's with the knowledge you have....no offense.

Hmm, this just cracks me up. Then it's NEVER going to work properly.

I do have a newer PC at home, but its a works one with work paying for the internet. So cant be putting ISOs on there. This PC isnt ten years old just yet but its getting there. But as they say; age ain't nothin but a number, I burn wii and 360 ISOs on this PC, they work fine, and if it isn't broke....ok now Im going overkill on the cliches

I am not going to bother looking it up, but I am assuming you can get an add-on PCI card with USB 2.0 ports for about $10 shipped.

thanks for the responses, I'm looking into the advice wabashman gave me; to convert the hard drive to NTFS. Im running out of space on my 320Gb Hard drive so going to buy a TB hard drive. Im going to format this as NTFS- can this be done via USB 1? or any other issues I should be aware of (other than the much derided fact that USB1 is inferior to all your fancy devices that possess the new fangled USB 2).

Yes, USB 1.0 can do anything that USB 2.0 can do, just much, much, much... s..l...o...w...e....r.

If you are going to spend the money on a new hard drive, why not just buy the USB 2.0 PCI card for $10 extra and actually be able put it to good use?

You could also buy a SATA card for about the same price, and get over twice the speed of even USB 2.0.

Usb 1 can not do anything usb 2 can do. 1 was implemented for hid devices like mice and keyboards and such. Does not really apply here though. As what you guys are refering to as usb 1 is really 1.1 that was released in 98.

With this being a work computer you are talking about I doudt they will put new hardware in it for you. Probably wont even let you put your own in it. With 1.1 being at least as fast as your internet connection. Use it to download to your external and move to your home pc to extract and burn.

You'll thank us for talking you into spending the extra $10 the next time you spend 5 hours transferring a huge file only to get an error in the last 10 minutes and have to completely restart the transfer.

I also recommend not buying a 'standard' external hard drive, but instead buying a good-quality internal hard drive and an external case for it. It will still be cheaper than buying a regular external drive and you will have the option of swapping out the hard drive for another one should you ever have the need or desire. The external cases will also offer both SATA and USB ports, which is nice. This is the option I use and I get ~40MB/s transfer from my USB 2.0, while I get ~90MB/s from SATA. Yes, it makes a difference.

As a comparison, USB 1.1 (thank you for the clarification...), operates at 1.5MegaBITs per second. Not even 1.5MegaBYTEs per second. Actually, 8x slower than 1.5Megabytes per second. That's why it is so insanely slow.

In the mean time, do everything you can possibly do on the slow-as-hell external drive itself. Download to it, unRAR files directly onto it, etc. It won't shave much time off, but it will shave off some percentage, which may be a lot when we are talking about hours and hours.

I've been trying to look up what you advised; buy an internal hard drive and buy an external case, but can't find any information other than sales sites like ebay and amazon. Do you mean I can buy a cheap internal and stick it in an external case and use it the same as a standard external drive?

Yep, that's exactly where I got mine from.

I personally use a Rosewill enclosure. Costs ~$40.
