Is it true you can't fully brick a Lite On drive? I haven't bricked it, but I just want to plan ahead.

I read other peoples post they said if you mess up, you just try to put key back again?

And exactly how many stages is a drive prone to being bricked? So far I know: inserting probe wrong and the part where you have to turn drive off and on... anything else I should know before I do it?

If you mean "brick" as in no firmware on the drive, then yes, it is easily fixable.

If you mean "brick" as in some how short out the drive electrically, then no, in most cases it is not recoverable.

Ok so in order to short out the drive I'd have to do something really dumb right? If I follow instructions carefully it won't happen?

Correct. What firmware version of the Lite-ON do you have?

Do you have the 74850C or the 83850C?

Yeah if you follow the guides, you will get it done. On the 74850C, don't let the spear/probe touch anything but the R707 hole.

Ok yes, I *THINK* I have the 74580, I checked my MFR date on xboxguides.com (it was made in march 29,2009) so pretty sure. So basically probe right hole, and use CK kit to power cycle drive when needed and I should be good anything else I should know?

thanks :)

Basically the only way to brick the Lite-On, or really any drive except for a Hitachi, is to put the power plug into the drive the wrong way 'round. That is easier to do than it sounds! I made that mistake once, and now I mark the top side of the power cable with a Sharpie marker to ensure I am putting it in correctly.

When you brick Hitachi drives, it happens any time you are writing firmware to it and the process screws up in any way.

Sounds like you are on the right track to flash your drive. As long as you get the drive key before you do anything else, you should be just fine no matter how many flashes it takes.

Just to be safe, give your firmware dump an original filename. Don't just let it save as orig.bin, or whatever. Save it as joe_liteon_orig.bin instead, for example. That way if you flash the new firmware to the drive without the DVD key present, then you accidentally dump the drive again, you won't overwrite your orig.bin and have your key lost forever and a console that is essentially worthless.
