Here what I have:
Via6421a Pci controller card
sata cable
sata to usb cable
benq 360 drive
hp pavillion dv9000

I cannot for the life of seem to get the drive to be recognized by my laptop. Im wondering why. I would like to make my own tutorial to show other gamers how to flash drives with a laptop. Can anyone give me some suggestions. I would love if someone could walk me through step by step but I understand that it is very time consuming.
I feel it might be important to know that I am trying to use this video from youtube.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TdB0j72nMY&feature=related
which involves iprep and firmware tools 1.2, but i feel like that might be a little outdated.

Please anyone help me, thanks in advance for all the help. Also you can pm with any links or pointers at all.

I think the chip set for your on board sata is not compatible. As far as I know you can't use a laptop but I'm sure someone has I just haven't seen it.

first of all, thanks for the reply..GREATLY APPREACIATED

second, i am certain the chipset that comes with my laptop is not compatible, i am wondering if i can somehow hook up the 6421 for the laptop to read, do you know anything about that. my goal is to get the laptop to read the chip then pursue the flashing. for some reason i cannot get my laptop to say it recognizes the card even with a sata to usb cable
but then again i dont really know much about this chip stuff
also, if its not possible, can i usb my chip into a desktop to get everything going possibly????
thanks in advance for any info

If you have a desktop you might as well just buy a compatible card. I bought this one from monoprice.com and it works perfect.
