You can convert any of the PS3's video outputs to VGA (analog) or DVI (digital), but if you're absolutely certain about best-quality picture, you'd be best off getting a something-to-DVI adapter. (I can't tell the difference between DVI and VGA anyway, but if you're a stickler.)
Moreover, it depends greatly on what kind of connector you use on your PS3. If you're connected using regular composite cables (red/white audio, yellow video) or component cables (red/white audio, red/green/blue video), I believe you'll be able to find a Composite/Component to VGA/DVI adapter somewhere.
I'm not sure if you can output video through an optical cable or not.
If you want the best picture, though, you'll definitely have to be using an HDMI cable with a HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You'll also have to make sure that adapter retains the HDCP protection of the HDMI signal, otherwise you'll just get... I'm not sure. Fuzz, probably. Or no picture at all.
There are plenty of articles out there on Google.
As far as which one to get and where... Newegg is always my first choice. Anyone else got any better sites for computer stuff, feel free to let me know.

I use a 20 inch widescreen LCD. I use a HDMI to DVI cable and I use my surround sound as my sound source. Full 1080p and great sound. I personally think a monitor looks better than a lot of TVs if you have a good monitor.

I do the same with a 22" at 720P, and I just got a 24" that I will use the same way for 1080P...I hate TVs because they cut off the edge of the picture.

Do they? New stuff every day.
I was lucky enough to get a monitor with an HDMI port, so video and audio just go through that to its two built-in speakers. I've got a surround system lying around somewhere in my house, but I'm too lazy to get it set up. Lol.
If I ever do, though, it'd be a very, very nice watching experience, I'd wager.
Anyway.
Hope this helped you out, Superb.

Knew I was forgetting something.
If your monitor has speakers built into it, then you can definitely have both video and audio output through the HDMI cable. You'll be limited to stereo sound, though.
And yes, if you choose composite cables for audio, you'll have to plug them into some sort of external speaker system. There are plenty of ways you can hook them up, as well, depending on your speakers.

Oops. I made a mistake. That's what comes of replying at 1 in the morning...
DVI, if I'm not mistaken, only transmits video. For the audio, you won't be able to transmit it using the HDMI cable-to-DVI cable. Sorry, my bad.
Does your monitor have any inputs for sound? It wouldn't surprise me if it had a 3.5mm or 2.5mm audio jack. If it does, you can buy a fairly cheap composite-to-3.5/2.5mm cable at any computer store.

yes it does have the 3.5mm input. I already have a setup that allows me to conect to my computer speakers with the same adapter and get sound through the speakers. I will try it with my ps3

For what? It seems like you said you've already got everything set up.
Did you decide not to get the HDMI-to-DVI adapter?
As a matter of fact, what are you using for video/audio output? Are you using a composite cable - red, white, yellow - or a component cable - red, white, red, green, blue - or an HDMI cable?
For that matter, why can't you connect using your DVI port instead of your VGA port? Are you using your DVI port for your computer?
But anyway, the first link looks okay, but it's eBay, so I'd suggest you do some research on the product first.
The second and third links I would also do some research on, just to make sure you know if they work how they're supposed to work.

It's usualy a bad idea to buy cables and flash memory from local sources...they tend to mark these up several hundred percent...I got two 8GB kingston microsdhc cards with USB readers for less than what bestbuy wanted for one of the same card, with no reader...and it was on sale at best buy.
