JTAG hack may also be a reference to recovering the drive key used in the DVD drive from the motherboard when all else fails.

The link that Chris provided contains info on how to do that as well.

But wouldn't the xbox need not to have been updated since the august update for that to work?

Maybe so. I know that the August update affected the ability to do homebrew in some way, but I am not entirely sure exactly how. I don't see how the update would've changed our ability to read the info stored on a flash chip, but it is possible that they encrypted it or something.

If I had to guess, I would think the update probably affected the ability to run code more than anything. Just grabbing the key from the motherboard wouldn't be a problem in that case.

The august update fixed a vunerability which homebrew needs to work (the 4532 kernel I believe).
