Scare tactic by a copyright owner. Comcast is one of the only ISPs that actually forwards that garbage. Nothing will come of it.

Or, at the very least, a private tracker.

No, the copyright holder (actually, the slimeball lawyers for a copyright holder) sent a complaint to your ISP saying IP 12.34.56.789, belonging to your network, was downloading copyrighted product X at Y time on Z date.

Comcast did the rest.

I've never heard of anything coming from this. If they wanted to sue you, they would just sue you. There is no history of any copyright holders except for music companies doing that, however.

Basically what happened is that the right holder had a 'mole' connected to the P2P tracker you used when you downloaded some copyrighted material and saw you like that. Not like they are keeping a special watch on your or anything.

Still, at the very least, use a private torrent tracker. Or, like the good advice wabashman gave, use newsgroups. Even better.

Above all, don't freak out.

A public tracker is a BitTorrent tracker anyone can use without verification.

A private tracker is a BitTorrent tracker that you must have membership to a website to use.

A newsgroup is an entirely different method for obtaining files that you will need to read up on yourself. The upside of this method is that it is basically not traceable. The downside is that it costs money.

Another option is to get a membership to Rapidshare or some other file storage website and using a specialized search engine or forum to get files. This also costs money but is untraceable.

Yes, less chance of getting the attention of copyright holders.

No, you won't be sued.

Like I said, no rights holders except for music companies have even tried suing.

This info is all US-centric, by the way.

There are lots of them out there. Not sure if it is within forum rules to post names directly here. Google will spill the beans, however.

and i really wouldnt call the big D a private site. they usually have open registration every friday. a private would be something like the black feline site that is completely underground and air tight when it comes to having new members join.

In regards to ISP letters, dont they only send them if they catch someone uploading/distributing content over P2P networks like Bit torrent or Limewire? So if you use a private tracker, dont u still have to upload content to maintain a certain share ratio?

This is why I only use newsgroups and the megaupload rapidshare type sites because you strictly only download. My news provider is Astraweb and pay a one time fee of 25 bucks to download 180GBs.

Also, for the megaupload rapidshare type sites, there is a Fire Fox add-on called SkipScreen that lets your browser skip the countdown clocks on these sites and can eliminate the need for a paid membership.

99.9% sure they simply try to get ahold of any IP they see connected to the tracker. They don't care about ratios, etc.

To make matters worse, read up on the folks who have been sued successfully by the music industry (and not settled). The damages awarded are crazy, and have nothing to do with how much the person actually distributed, or even technically COULD have distributed, but simply by the fact that they made the songs 'available'.
