My PS3 recently got the YLOD and Sony want £128 to fix it. Having already lost one due to the Blu-Ray drive stopping reading disks this seemed a bit steep so have decided to buy a new slim model.
As im selling my broken 60g model for around £90 on Ebay i want to wipe the HDD incase the buyer fixes it and uses the auto login to get to my account and bank details.
My question is if i were to put my HDD into a friends PS3 to format it would putting his original HDD back in afterwards make the system try and format that drive as well?
Also does the HDD contain all the system info like logins or just the game data, save data, movies, music...etc?
Any answers are much appreciated, thanks for reading :)
I believe the PS3 has a Restore System option or so under System Settings. This SHOULD wipe your drive clean for you, resetting it to its initial settings - meaning it's essentially as new as when you first got it.
Taking your friend's hard drive out would not be a good idea, because, as you correctly guessed, his PS3 will re-prompt him to format his drive, meaning unless he backs up the drive, he'll lose everything.
As far as what the hard drive actually contains, I'm not too sure on that. I would assume it contains all the stuff you listed, but I can't be certain.

Ok thanks very much. Any thoughts on an easy way to wipe the HDD with a pc?
You can also search Google for "wipe hard drive" or something like that and you should find plenty of good links. There might also be some freeware hard drive wipers as well. I'm not sure.
You user details are stored on the PS3 itself, not the HDD, so if someone was able to fix it, they could probably log into your account, as your selling it on Ebay, why dont you try and fix the YLOD yourself and delete your account(s).
i dont think your account info stays with the ps3 if the hdd is reformated. user details yes but any sign in info has to be reset up. i could be wrong but it seems like every time i put a new hdd i 1 of r ps3s the acounts can b restored but i need 2 resign up for the psn.
