My question is does DVDRipper damage or reduce the quality of the original DVD. I ripped my copy of Toy Story 2 and now it doesn't play in the DVD anymore? Any Ideas ?

So this basically means I have a problem with my DVD player.

before you toss the player out, clean the disk up and try it again...also try a different disk...

Did as you suggested. Thanks for the advice, unfortunately it didn't work. It seems to only play VCD and SVCD's (even though theoretically its not supposed to). Looks like during my experimentation phase I may have played a burnt version of something I wasn't supposed to. Down to the shops. It was only a cheap old thing anyway. Have a question though (forgive my ignorance), what's the difference between MPEG1 and MPEG2 (is it the difference between VCD and SVCD).

vcd has a standard of 240 x 480 picture and a bit stream rate of 1150. SVCD has a standard of 480 x 480 picture and a bit stream rate of up to 2520. The higher the bit stream, the smoother the motion. obviously, SVCD will have a better picture..however on a standard 80 minute cd, you get 80 minutes of VCD video and up to 55 minutes of SVCD (you could get more, but then the picture quality really goes down)..

...and do DVD players that play VCD also play SVCD. By the way I 'disposed'of my old DVD player at the weekend and got a new one. Hopefully better luck this time.

not all play both...the best site to check out what a dvd player really plays is www.dvdrhelp.com and look up players...

they all pretty much work the same...the most popular is dvd decryptor...I use that and SmartRipper...both are free.

I have used Smaer Ripper. That seems pretty simple to use. My concern with the DVD encryptor is the file size. I havn't tried it yet but it says something about DVD's greater than 4.5G. I guess I'll tackle that when I try and recreate DVDs, at the moment I'm pretty satisfied trying to learn about VCD and SVCD.
