Hi all,

I keep getting errors when verifying games I have burnt. I tried to burn two different games (the 2nd game I tried to burn different dumps but still the same). I am using an external LG DVD burner which I have only had for about 4/5 months

The discs all burnt fine in imgburn with no reported errors but when they where going to be verified I got an error. I have now churned through 4 discs and the same thing has happened.

The error I kept getting on the 2nd game is as follows:

Miscompare at LBA 1055188

Offset 49

Device 0x00

Image File 0xF3

Sector 1

Now my question is simply what's going on! Is it
a) They are both bad dumps (even though they both passed through abgx360 fine) and its just a coincidence this is happening on them both.
b) My drive it broken and I need to get another.
c) Something else is going on that I need to consider that is messing up the burn.

The logging message for the burn doesn't show any errors during the burn phase, I just get that error when it tries to verify.

What's everyone's advise because I am not sure what is going on and don't want to buy a new burner (ever though this one is quite new)!

Thanks

EDIT: Oh and I was wondering if I should use these disc's, as they burnt ok, or can I use them? Is there more risk of a banning using them?

a) is not a possibility because ImgBurn wouldn't know if they're bad dumps or not. All it's doing is comparing the data on the disc with the ISO on your hard drive and for whatever reason, the two aren't matching up.

Which brand of discs are you using? Cheap/poor quality media could be the cause. If you're not using Verbatims, get some and try one of those. Also, look for an updated firmware for the burner before you burn any more discs. If neither of those things help, it could be that your burner is on the way out. External burners do seem to be more problematic than regular internal burners for desktop machines for some reason though.

I wouldn't play the games that don't verify with ImgBurn. They might play fine to start with, but then they might crash/freeze when hitting the section of the disc where the data doesn't match up with the ISO. I don't think it would increase your chance of a ban, because even if you were playing originals, a scratched disc or a laser that's on its way out could cause similar errors, but I'm only speculating.

I'm using Singapore Verbatims which is why I was SO miffed when they failed (know one wants an expensive coaster to they)!

I have read different opinions on verifying and I have always been a bit suspicious of games that don't verify correctly.

Do you think I can rule out it being a bad dump? I did try another dump of one of the games that also failed too.

iso's and actual discs very rarely verify.... because of the way discs work.. The disk will be burned to complete sectors padded out by the burning software where necessary, the iso can be any size as this sector fill requirement doesn't exist.

The only test for a successful burn from iso is if the disk plays.. forget this "verify" crap because it takes ages and 99% of the time due to sector fill it fails.

Most people are talking about abgx360 verification when they use the term "verification". As far as abgx360 verification goes, if you're ripping your own games and you know what you're doing, then they only need to pass the stealth check and you can leave autofix on level 2. If you download a game, you have no idea where it's come from, so if it doesn't verify in abgx360 then you can't possibly know if it matches up with a retail rip which is why you're better off setting autofix to level 3 and waiting until games verify before you burn them - if you want to minimise the risk of a ban that is.

If the ImgBurn verification fails, that's always a bad thing, because it means that the contents of the burned disc don't match up 100% with the data on your hard drive.

As I said above, ImgBurn will burn whatever data you give it and if you have the verify box checked, it will then check to see that the contents of the burned disc match up with that data on your hard drive. A bad dump would verify just fine in ImgBurn if the burn is good, because ImgBurn is only comparing one thing with another to see if they match, therefore that's not the cause of your problems. ImgBurn can't possibly know if Xbox 360 ISOs are properly stealthed or whether the actual game data is corrupt or whatever - that's what abgx360 is for - so a bad dump would still verify just fine in ImgBurn, as all it's telling you is if the burn is good or bad, nothing more.

That's not true at all. Every single disc I've ever burned (close to 300) has verified 100% in ImgBurn with no read errors or miscompares.

Hmm that makes a bit of sense BUT I have burnt loads of my backup iso's to disc using imgburn and I have to say most of them have verified. Its only the odd occasion when they don't verify (like these two games have).

Ok so to sum up are you saying that, based on the fact it keeps failing when I try to verify, that perhaps my LG burner is on the way out?

I don't think it can be the disc's as the ones before burnt fine so perhaps I need to think about replacing the burner.

I've downloaded the latest firmware from the LG site and I am going to try and put that on and give it another go. If the verification fails again perhaps I need to think about getting another drive.

I do all my burning from my laptop, which is why I have an external. They are annoyingly expensive when compared to an internal mind!

Has anyone had any joy from running an internal DVD writer through a USB or SATA case from a laptop? I was thinking of getting a case so then when the drive fails I can just keep getting a new internal drive and replacing it?

Any thoughts / ideas / recommendations?

They should always verify. If ImgBurn verification only worked "rarely" then why would the creator of ImgBurn even put that feature into the software, and why would he check the option by default on a fresh install? Why would every single one of my burns verify perfectly? scum101 is simply wrong about how it works.

Ok fair enough, what about my idea of getting a external sata case and sticking an internal sata DVD writer in it?

Best option for an external burner by far. Make sure you get a full-sized 3.5" (oops, make that 5.25") burner and enclosure. If you get a 'slim' 2.5" burner and enclosure you are essentially just getting a laptop burner. I don't know exactly the reason why, but laptop burners -suck-.

Yeah I've been there with laptop writers, mine went quite quickly which is why I moved to an external one!

I have bought a 5.25 SATA IDE case which supports 3.5" HDD's and DVD drives so when that turns up I shall get a new internal writer and see how that gets on.

Can anyone recommended a good, hardly internal writer? I don't want to get another drive that is going to give up early again

Yeah, sorry, I meant a full-size 5.25", not 3.5". I was thinking HDD specs :)

re burners: I have an old-as-dirt Sony 710A that was literally one of the first affordable ($100 at the time of purchase) burners to support dual layer burning, its max speed is 2.4x for DL, so I don't have much room to talk. Of course I guess it is a good sign that it is still going strong.

That being said, I've read many people sing the praises of the Sony Optiarc line of burners. I've also read good things about Pioneer and Samsung. I think any internal burner that gets good reviews on NewEgg is probably just fine.
