my problem is that i can't go into a party or play against friends.
i checked my nat and it was open.
the problem only occurs when my xbox is connected to a router.
when i connect it directly to a modem i can talk and play with everyone. i need to connect the xbox with the router because my modem is downstairs.
how can i talk and play with friends when my xbox is connected to my router.

You might want to assign your 360 a static IP address and then put it into the DMZ on your router. Basically that means you take away firewall protection from that IP address, which shouldn't be an issue.

Also, once you have done that, forward the ports for Xbox Live. Forward ports 3074 and 53, both UDP and TCP, to the static IP of your 360.

This should help.
