i have a 360 with a hitachi gdr-3120L that i dumped and flashed with a friends desktop that i no longer have access to so i cant get to my original fiemware of the hitachi. the drive has quit working and i bought a samsung ts-h943a f/w=ms28. i am now trying to mod the firmware of the samsung with a different desktop with the via pci sata card suggested in multiple threads. is there any way to get the samsung to work on the 360 without that original firmware.

Yes, as long as you didn't completely fry the Hitachi.

Assuming it is a laser problem or something, just dump the firmware from the Hitachi and inside that dumped firmware will be the DVD key that you need.

Use that DVD key for your Samsung drive.

Don't forget to spoof to drive to make it believe it is a Hitachi.

On the Jungle Flasher site, http://www.jungleflasher.net , there is a good PDF tutorial.

Before you switch drives, you may want to try doing a pot calibration.

i have the pdf. i found a section where it talks about leaving the drive open mode b for vista and 7 but i am running xp. i tried it anyways and i still cannot see the hitachi in the drop down menu. is the pot adjustment for a laser swap only? i am trying to switch a full drive.

XP and Vista instructions should be the same. I've only ever used XP, though.

I recommend disconnecting all of your other DVD drives when flashing your 360 DVD drive. It is safer, because you can't accidentally flash the wrong drive and brick it, and it is easier, because you can see for sure which drive is reporting back to you.

Put your 360 drive onto a SATA port that you know the IO address of. So, for instance, if you know the IO address of your primary DVD drive in your PC is 0x01F0 because JF has reported it to you, then swap your 360 drive to that SATA port and you will know that it will be on IO port 0x01F0 for sure. You can even 'hot swap' the drives after Windows has started and the PC is still on.

The pot adjustment makes the laser you already have more powerful. You lower the electrical resistance to the laser and it therefore can output more power. If you do a pot calibration, you don't need to swap anything at all.

Do you have another SATA drive that you can hook up to a SATA port so that you know for sure which port you need to be using?

Once you know for sure which IO port you should be using, then at least you can troubleshoot from there.

noo unfortunately i do not have another sata device other than the new dvd rom for the 360. the pci card only has 2 sata slots and i tried it in both. the drive is listed with all the properties under port properties in spot 0xCC00 on the drop down menu. if i change that drop down to one of the other listed ports it will say no drive detected in vendor slot.

Oh okay, well that's a good sign. So you know which port to use at least.

If you have a v79 Hitachi you will also need an 'unlock' audio CD in order to make things work. What version of Hitachi drive are you using?

Alright, well as long as you know the port and you are sure it is in mode B, you can go ahead and just try to dump it. Drives I have flashed haven't always been assigned a drive letter.

From JF's Hitachi tab, select 'Dump Drive' and then click 'Read to Source'. Also, make sure you have the 46/47 radio button checked in the same tab.

If you are sure it is in mode B and JF still refuses to dump it, try getting Maximus Firmware Toolbox instead. It can sometimes be useful when JF doesn't want to comply.

Have you tried rebooting with the drive already in mode B? Windows may recognize it then.

i installed the drivers from the raid card and windows assigned it a letter and i was able to get my key dumped. now the samsung in the mean time has ixtreme 1.6 on it from confusion of flashing with a string of 000000000000000000000 in the box before i new what had happened so i am now going to attempt to reflash the samsung.

Cool. Glad to hear that. Just make sure you manually enter the correct drive key before flashing. Good luck.

If you don't have the drive key on it, it will do that.

You need to get the drive back to a flashable state, then erase, and then reflash it with the drive key manually entered. Then it will work.
