I've read that the ban has to do with the MAC ID of the system. Something is being read to determine if the system has been modded or not an I'm not just talking about a FW hack, this is also for HDD's and DVD drive's for those that have replaced theirs.

my friend just text me that he had gotten banned... he had a hitatchi 1.51 firmware. not sure how though....he wasn't playing any game that hasn't been released. unless someone told on him. but even then i'm not sure if you can get banned..

If microsoft could detemine if the dvd drive was flashed everyone that has ever flashed their dvd drive would be banned (lots of people).

i have a theory.
ms can somehow detect if there was a change or not.
for example, my friends who bought xbox then went straight to a modder to get it flashed are fine so far.. not banned.
but my friends who first installed 1.5 for a few months, then installed 1.6 later got banned.
so maybe ms can detect if the hardware/firmware got changed.
and one more thing.. it might be something to do with which country you are in..
people who got banned... could be from US mostly.. i don't know... let's find out.

I'll update you guys and let u know if I'm banned once I get home. If I'm not great if I am I knew the consequences when I got it modded. It's not like you can't use the Xbox still for those good single player games that u don't need live for. Also u can get a used 360 at Gamestop now for 120 with a controller and start over. I'll be home in 25 mins I'll let u know if I'm still good on live

Just fired up my xbox.
i didnt get hit with the hammer yet. on line and everything seems ok. just not many friends online. hmmmm wonder why...

thats all i really do is play single player games. so its really no matter to me. just wish someone at M$ would leak out the actual info on how they choose who gets banned and who doesn't.
probably a big wheel of names they randomly pick lol

Here's my situation:
Not banned yet
BenQ 1.6 FW (have not upgraded to 1.61)
Have not played any wave 4 games (not ever used activate.iso)
Played Forza 3 pre-release (a week before release) offline with HD and ethernet cable out and was not banned
played only up to wave 3 including Borderlands (not on LIVE though), Forza 3, Brutal Legend, etc...
Question: My version of Forza 3 is verified by abgx...does this mean it is not a review copy and is safe to play online?

Definitely does not have to do with connect kit or powered via 360 console during flash as I do not own a connect kit and none of the consoles I have modded are banned.

My friend replaced his Samsung MS25 with an unofficial BenQ drive
that he ordered off of Ebay from Hong kong.Flashed it with 1.6FW
Has never played any games early.Has not played Boarderlands game and has not played any wave 4 games yet and got banned today.Just trying to help

I actually believe this to be true!! Why else would they want to wait 2 weeks (most companies pay bi-weekly) before MW2 and its bundle... sneaky!
First time posting, long time reader here. I have a question: I have a 360 "unflashable" liteon (I tried but it didnt keydump after several tutorials and hours of trying).
Here is a question: If I would to flash an xbox now (or in a week or so), will it be on this ban wave? I know there is no sure answer but I was curious for those that have been through these ban waves before and how they dealt with them. I searched other ban waves but it really didnt answer my question.

JediOrc -- No, no ban wave will be over by then and the soonest you would be banned by console is at the next ban wave. That probably won't happen for quite a while. Actually, the last ban wave before this was last November, I believe.

flashed earlier today from 1.51 to 1.61
powered xbox from the xbox when flashed
never played anything early
all games are rips I made and abgx checked
diddnt try a wave 4 until after 1.61 flash
booted tekken 6 to make sure the flash worked
playing world at war now on line
my friend has exact same senario and he is not banned either

Microsoft Confirms LIVE Console Ban Wave to IGN
"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs," a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN. "In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox LIVE."
Microsoft also added this is a standing policy and isn't tied to any specific time-frame.
There you have it. This is an official MS ban wave. Who knows when and IF it will rain on another small percentage soon.

God, people you need to calm down and think. If you ONLY play verified rips, or ri your own games, you will be fine. I've logged in, and since I follow those two rules, I am fine. Be smart, and if you get banned, it's your own fault.

Hahah you got me! It's all in fun guys. I have not been banned yet but I knew the rules before entering the game. There must be a way microsoft is able to ping the drive.. or maybe if they "can't" ping the drive.. who knows.
Ping the drive? OMG.... do you even know what Ping means?
Sure I do, is it not within reason to suggest that the drive can be checked for firmware just as the firmware version on your pc's drive can be checked with the right tools? A ping is an acknowledgment request. Do we have to start a network 101 class for you?
This is even more dumb. I work in IT. You cannot ping something and get a response of the firmware version or anything like that. If you know anything, you would know that pinging is to determine if a host is alive. To think it actually returns firmware information is just beyond ignorant, and you should no longer be able to comment if you think so.

Staying off will not help you at all. You either are banned, or you aren't. You can't stay offline and "miss" the banwave. If you are to be banned, the second you get back on, you will be. Man up.
