Hi,
I just bought an xbox 360 flashed with what I was told is 1.6 Iextreme firmware. I can't get the new GTA IV episodes to work. I have downloaded 2 different iso's and neither works. Every other game I have backked up so far has worked (fallout 3, RE5, Halo 0DST). When I put GTA in the disk is recognized as a dvd instead of a game and then loads to an white Xbox 360 logo screen and doesn't go any further. Does anyone have any ideas why this is?

Yeh i think its because of the 4th wave , check up on it but im pretty sure 1.6 you have to burn a disc that will allow the bootup to occur, since 1.6 security wont allow you to boot games with 4th wave

Oh yeah. Actually I think I remember reading something about that. Any more info? Do you know what the disk is called so I can google it?

Yep, this is the reason why.

Search the forum for info on activate.iso and you'll find where to download it, how to burn it, and how to use it. iXtreme 1.61 has been released for Samsung and BenQ drives though, so if you have either of those drives just update and then wave 4 games will boot without having to do a disc swap. iXtreme 1.61 for Lite-On drives should be out soon too.

In fact, here you go: -

http://www.sendspace.com/file/5ed5xr

Download it, unrar it, then burn it to a dual layer disc (it has to be a dual layer disc). As the ISO is so small, ImgBurn will throw up a prompt asking if you want it to burn it just on the first layer of the disc. Make sure you say yes.

Once it's burned, you put that disc in the drive and it'll say "Play DVD". Press A, then eject the disc and put your wave 4 game in and you'll be able to boot it. It's a one time thing, so you will have to do that every time you boot a wave 4 game. BTW, some people say you don't have to press A when the "Play DVD" thing comes up and you can just swap the disc at that point, but I've only tried it by pressing A first and it works every time for me.

Cool. Thanks.

Hey I have another questions. Is it difficult to update your Iextreme? I don't have to open the xbox up to update my firmware right? Also how do I tell what type of drive my xbox has?

You do have to open up your console to flash it, unless you've installed one of those Blaster things that means you can flash it without opening it (and if you had, you wouldn't be asking, lol).

You can tell which drive you have by the shape of the drive tray. BenQ and Lite-On drives have the same drive tray, so you have to look through a little hole for the colour of a wire. Google for some info and you'll find pics that show you what to look for. All the info you need about flashing is on this forum if you search. Check out the ulimate sticky at the top of this forum section too.

Damn...I hope I don't have to update my firmware anytime soon. I've never opened an xbox up before. Anyway I just went to burn the boot disk and got a message about the layer break. Should I leave the layer break as it is set or do I have to change something to burn the boot disk?

Don't set a layer break and burn the image only on the first layer.

Is this the only way to play wave 4 games at the moment? By using a 1 shot boot? Or is there a way round this? My disc tray is a nightmare to open so the boot disc method is going to take me ages

If you've got a Samsung or BenQ drive you can update to iXtreme 1.61, then you don't need to use the disc. If you've got a Lite-On, using the disc is currently the only option until a version of iXtreme 1.61 is released for Lite-On drives.

I dont know what drive I have. I have read you can tell the difference by looking for a white/ yellow wire with the faceplate off. I cant see this anywhere. Is it clear to see? Ive shone a torch underneath the disc tray and cant see any wires. Bought it in Dec 2006 and its a complete write off, the tray doesnt open without a paper clip being jammed on the release catch. If this is a symptom of a particular drive?

The yellow/white wire thing is only so that you can tell the difference between Lite-On and BenQ drives, which both have the same drive tray. If you bought the console in December 2006 (and assuming the drive is the original) then it won't be a Lite-On as they didn't exist then.

Here's a pic that should make it clear to you: -

http://www.tronix.co.nz/images/xbox_360_...ntification.jpg

What you could also do is buy a replacement drive on eBay and when you open the console to update the firmware, you could swap the drive at the same time so you no longer have to use a paper clip to open it. It's no more difficult than updating the drive you already have. The only difference is that once you've dumped the firmware from your old drive to get the key, you use that info to flash the replacement drive, rather than the old one.

Thanks for the link. Pretty sure mine is an Hitachi. Ill have to find a paper clip in order to double check though. I've been meaning to replace it but I have read that before doing so it might be worthwhile checking the laser and getting rid of any dust which may be causing the failure to open.

In regard to GTA, on a hitachi drive what are my options? Do I use the boot disc or can I update like on a Samsung/ Benq

I don't know what the newest firmware for Hitachi drives is, but iXtreme 1.51 for Hitachi drives will boot wave 4 games without the boot disc. I think 1.51 may well be the newest actually, but I'm not sure.

I have never updated the firmware so I probably dont have 1.51. It boots recent releases though, is ODST wave 4? As mine boots ODST fine. Sorry for the question, I tried googling it but "ODST wave 4" but it just comes up with the firefight mode which annoyingly uses the term "waves" as it's difficulty structure.

The first disc of ODST is wave 3. The other disc is wave 2, because it's basically Halo 3 multiplayer with all of the maps. If you do have a Hitachi drive, then 1.51 can't be installed on it or it would boot wave 4 games without using the activate.iso boot disc, so if I was you, I'd give 1.51 a shot.

You can check the waves of verified games here: -

Sorry, the way I phrased that was confusing because I mentioned activate.iso and I shouldn't have.

What I should have said was this - If you already had 1.51 installed, then wave 4 games would work, so as you don't have it installed, then I would install that if I was you.

activate.iso only works with iXtreme 1.6 and above, so it's not even an option for you at the moment.

To clarify: -

iXtreme 1.51 Hitachi - boots all waves
iXtreme 1.51 all other drives - boots only waves 1-3

iXtreme 1.6 - boots waves 1-3 (and other waves with the activate.iso disc)

iXtreme 1.61 - boots waves 1-4 (and other waves with the activate.iso disc)

As iXtreme 1.6 or 1.61 is not available for your drive, then 1.51 is the choice for you.

Turns out I have a samsung drive. Can I use the boot disc? As I dont know how to update firmware. Also when ABGX has been eventually been updated to deal with these wave 4s will GTA just burn to disc like any other game would without the need to use a boot disc or update firmware? Or is updating firmware a must to play this?

If you don't want to use the boot disc, yes it is a must.
