what is the purpose of NAND backup?

So I finally successfully softmode my nephew wii when it was in 4.1U. I'd backup NAND, installed preloader but the kid went home and update to 4.2U. Can I use the NAND recover mode to put it back to what it was before the update? Basically will the NAND put the wii back to version 4.2U. Thank-you.

Currently, I don't think there is a way to downgrade from firmware 4.2 without the possibility of bricking your system. Your best bet is to accomplish the softmod for System Menu 4.2.
