I have a desktop machine with a number of SATA power connectors. Is it possible to simply use my desktop to power the drive and forgo the Connectivity kit.
Would rather not go through the risk of having the machine flagged for SATA disconnection.

The 360 doesn't use a sata to power the drive. It uses its own special cable, that can either be powered with the system, or with the kit.

I have flashed all of mine and my friends xboxs with a connectivity kit, I always used the xbox to power the drive and I have only 1 banned xbox out of about 15 total and I played early releases and bad rips on the one that got banned. IMHO its a myth that using the xbox to power it will get you banned.
There are plent of Senior Members and Afterdawn Addicts here that will agree with me.

Yup I agree with you! People need to get that info through their thick skulls to understand what's going on. It's just like the whole thing asking if they played this game would they get banned. Well if you can't handle getting banned, then don't mod your box!

you dont need the connectivity kit just use your xbox 360 to power it up but it is a lil tricky since you do have to flop the drive over to use the probe for your lite on and powering off the drive i think i pulled out the power connector that runs from the xbox to the drive so i could get it in vendor mode...but it isnt too tough all you need is a probe and a compatible chipset on your mobo and you're good to go :) get a good tutorial i like the coffree ones on youtube

Leerage, I gave dred the benefit of the doubt early on. I wanted to believe he was really just a misinformed guy who was interested in the 360.
However, as time goes on, I am more and more convinced that he is just a standard-issue forum troll in the truest sense. He wants to get a reaction from forum members by pushing buttons he knows people will react to.
He will never change his mind, nor his behavior... because he is purposely acting this way to get a reaction, which he has been getting in spades. I've been just as guilty as anyone.
