I have a Hitachi I got out of a red ringed box. I fixed the red ring, but the hitachi drive isn't reading discs. It doesn't even try to read them. If you put a disc in, screen changes to "Reading" for half a second and then immediately switches back to "Open Tray". The drive does not try to spin up. The laser itself flashes red once and stops. If you push laser out of starting position, it will move back to it, flash red, and then stop, just like before. I've tried this same drive in a couple other boxes and it gives the same result. I have a second hitachi from another red ring with a working laser...do you think it would be worth it to switch out lasers and see?

Anyone have any advice?

to me it sounds like a burned out laser. you can find cheap replacement on ebay. just make sure you get the right one. it could also be that the lens needs to be cleaned or that you need to preform a POT calibration.

Save some time buy a new drive off E-bay Benq go for $25 Hitachi sucks

no one really knows 100% my brother has had his samsung spoofed as a hitachi for over a year now and no ban.
