Hi all,

I have read enough posts here, and know that it is indeed best to go with a Verbatim (Singapore) disc to burn games. I had a number of CMC MAGs on hand (Philips) and I decided (for Shiggles) to try burning on them. I tried Forza 3 and Saw. Saw worked on my XBox without an issue - perfect burn, and am able to play the game and copy it to the HDD and what not. But with Forza, and pretty much any other game I have tried since - no go.

What's weird is that they burn fine with IMGBurn, and when I verify, they seem to verify fine as well. No trouble reading anything. However they just won't play on my XBox. From time to time I can get to the intro screen, and then it errs out. Disc unreadable errors galore.

All my retail games play without a hitch. Why would this happen = there are no sector errors or burn errors, and I have burned it using the guides available around here - layer breaks and book type set etc, all are verified by ABGX before I proceed. Still, no go.

Quite perplexed.

It's possible that the discs are not great burns, but your 360's drive is more sensitive to that than your PC's drive, especially if they are detected as games and then boot, but crap out with disc errors.

Also, sometimes 360s can be sensitive to certain media types. A member here, qwert99, switched from cheaper discs to Verbatims, but none of the Verbatims would even show up as a game in his console, even though the games burned on the cheaper discs continued to work fine. When he tried the burned Verbatims on a mate's console, they worked fine, so it can definitely vary from console to console. I don't know why exactly that is, but it does happen.

That's a bummer. I have a number of Verbatims scheduled for Delivery on the morrow, but am worried whether it will solve my issue. I have tried every permutation in the book wrt burn speed, and though common sense tells me it shouldn't make a difference if it verifies fine, I can imagine that the 360 drive is more sensitive than my IDE Lite On drive (DH-20A4P-04) that I use to burn my games.

Last night I tried verifying with ABGX and to my glee, it found read errors on a couple of my disks, and overjoyed I tried one it found to be error-free, but the same issues reoccur.

At this time I am contemplating getting a new DVD Burner, I looked at Newegg but couldn't find the Pioneer 116 series. The few Pioneers that were there didn't have stellar reviews. I looked into a Sony Optiarc - which is what you have Funkysould (have been reading the forums here ;)), but you said that the burn quality is a hit or a miss on the 7260s. Bah.

what drive do you have in your 360? as i've found both samsung and especially hitachi to be temperamental with different media. however my benq will happily read just about anything that gets thrown at it;

I have a LiteOn - the XBox has a build date of December '08. Wish I could replace it with a BenQ.Have heard good things about it.

The benq and liteon are almost the same drive; i've not heard many problems with liteons and reading issues; However i only know two people who have them! Hopefully its just a media issue you have, and not a drive problem. If all else fails, you can change the drive relatively cheaply;

Alas, yes I too hope that's the case. The Verbatims will be delivered this evening. Fingers crossed.

I have had more, and more serious, issues with Lite-Ons that were manufactured in Nov/Dec '08 than any other drive.

Verbatims may fix it, though it didn't fix mine.

If not, you can attempt a pot calibration tweak (be careful to use a multimeter and find a guide that is specifically for BenQ/LiteOn as the process is not the same as it is for other drives)

If that fails, you can replace the laser for literally $11 shipped from eBay and hopefully that will solve your problem.

If not... time to buy a BenQ for $30 shipped.

Woo. :- ( bad news if it actually is the drive. BenQ it might need to be in that case. Thanks for your input guys. Will report back later in the day if it does indeed turn out to be the drive.

A pot calibration tweak is free if you have a multimeter and a screw driver. Definitely try that before going through the hassle and expense of getting a new drive.

Ah yes, I don't currently own one. But you are correct, would be worth looking into before I undertake the hassle of replacing the drive.

I would certainly recommend it. You will need to borrow or buy a multimeter that can do 20k ohms resistance reading, though.

A laser replacement is also a lot less hassle than getting an entirely new drive as well.

The problem with buying 'new' drives is that all of the drives sold as 'new' rarely are. So you may just be getting another drive with the same issues.

Of course I suppose the same could be said of the laser replacement.

Whaddaya know, it was the DVD quality. Got my batch of Verbatim (Singapore) DVD DLs from Newegg this evening, burned Forza (over which I coastered 12 DVD DLs - Phillips), popped it in my Box and woaza! It works without a hitch! I copied the game to the HDD, and even better :) It does make a difference to bump up from Medium Level to High quality!

Sweet. Always happy to hear a success story. I just got back from the store buying Memorex discs because my Lite-On won't play Verbatims. Haha :)
