So my console has been red ringing occasionally (it's 3 years old, usually i turn it off and back on and it's fixed). The thing is though, I can play a few games of NHL but as soon as I try to get the update, my screen glitches, and the 360 freezes. I turn it off and back on only to find 3 rings. It boots fine, then after about ~30 seconds, it rrod's. I've never seen the e74 error but the red lights are in everything except the 2nd controller.

The error code is :
0230 I believe.

Dont think the system update caused this, it sounds as if your xbox was dying anyway. If it did cause RROD, then it would be all over then net already.

didn't the last one cause RROD on a few systems though? I just dont understand why all my games play fine but when i try to log into live it crashes on the update screen... seems like it's the update to me?

I really just want to see if I'm banned from live.

RROD has nothing to do with a system update

Actually, you're misinformed.. Had you done a "simple google search" homesick (as many say here) you would have found that has indeed caused rrod on a few consoles.. I remember ms having a statement about the August update stating that the chances were very rare but possible (some crazy probablity i.e. 1 in 1,000,000):

Remember to do that "simple search" prior to posting :)

looks like this person is having the same problem
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-152/ban_wave_hit-811818/

Although his grammar isn't that great, I too put borderlands into my 360, got rrod after trying to update, but I can play NHL and other backups no problem..

I have no idea whats going on here.
