I was just wondering, with all these lite-on drive issues with the new 1.61 fireware and all, Is it safe to spoof to a benQ or other drive that CAN already do the 1.61, or is it less risky to use the activateCD to boot games? It just seems like a decent option, if it's safe. Any info would be nice, I have been out of monitoring the forums for some time, and lost track of the happenings.

Not spoofing is probably safer, just based on logic.

However, there are many people who have had spoofed drives for a very long time without ever being banned.

MS almost certainly cannot detect firmware versions on drives. However, the way they MAY be able to detect spoofed drives is if a Lite-On drive, for instance, would usually respond to a certain instruction in a certain way, and your Hitachi (for instance) that is flashed as a Lite-On, responds to that instruction a bit differently.

Of course that is all in theory. It may not actually work that way or be detectable at all.

I try to avoid spoofing if at all possible, just to be paranoid about it. But... if you must, you must.

Also, the newer Lite-On drives are having problems because the drive key can't be pulled, so spoofing doesn't really make a difference as that will not help to recover the drive key.

I understand what you are saying to a degree. Here is the thing, I have a Lite-on drive currently. bought this system back in May. It's one of the Red units for when Resident Evil came out, with the Jasper motherboard. I'm not sure the exact model of the cd drive, as i haven't opened it in awhile.

If i was able to mod this system before, and pull the keys and all, then why wouldn't I be able to use those keys onto a BenQ or Hitachi drive with 1.61? Others have posted that is the process they have gone threw, do you think i would be able to? Got me a little concerned when ya said about it not mattering since it's lite-on, but i figured since it was a liteon that was Mod-able previously, then I could take those keys and move them to another drive, please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Also, I have read that loading from the ActivateCD (bootcd) method is completely safe, as long as I make sure the game is 100% verified. anyone comment on this?

Yes, as long as the drive key has been pulled before, it would be fine. The only thing is that you must use the firmware that you want to emulate, AFAIK. In other words, if you wanted your BenQ to pretend to be a LiteOn, you would have to use the LiteOn iXtreme firmware. Since the latest release is 1.6, you wouldn't be able to boot wave 4 games automatically. As I said, I've never spoofed a drive myself, so I could potentially be wrong on this. Other forum members, feel free to correct me.

Yes, you are correct. The reason wave 4 games won't boot is because when the last firmware was released, wave 4 games didn't exist. The firmware has security precautions in it that do not allow you to harm yourself by playing unsafe games. When the firmware sees a type of game it recognizes as 'corrupt', it prevents you from booting it.

Of course you know that the game is not in fact corrupt, and it is simply a new revision by MS. The firmware creators predicted this happening and created the activate disc for this purpose. So the activate disc will bypass the security features of the drive itself, and force it to boot any disc.

you cant write liteon firmware to a benq drive.you can only write benq firmware to a benq drive and vice versa.what you do is get your key off your liteon drive and write it to your benq drive.then you flash your benq drive with benq 1.61 firmware and spoof as a liteon drive in jf. and thats it
